From what I have just heard, that may not be quite true as they will discontinue paying for a device and supplies if you indicate to your DME that you are no longer using the device or the DME cannot prove compliance if your account is audited.

You are only in compliance with Medicare rules using the machine paid for by Medicare. So hold off use of the other machine until you have completed your compliance (which is typically 90 days). This goes for people with any kind of backup machine. Get past the compliance FIRST.
I would add that in addition, Medicare plays fair and will fix or replace your non-working machine during the first 5 years (with certain exceptions - don't tell them that the cat knocked it to the floor!). So, it makes sense to use only that machine and just use your backup for a couple of nights every few months.
