7 year old newly diagnosed with sleep apnea

Poor little guy.

I wish I could remember what my daughter said about taking iron and how to make it more usable/available to your body (and which types are easiest to absorb). If you talk to your pharmacist, I'm sure they can help. Allopathic doctors aren't usually very helpful in this regard.

RE: 7 year old newly diagnosed with sleep apnea
Hi Mo,
Before I figured out that much of my sleep issues were OSA I had investigated magnesium and melatonin. I can't say I noticed a difference with either but I still take magnesium on the recommendation of a alternative care specialist. My sister swears by magnesium as a sleep aid for her. She deals with a lot of back pain.
On another note about OSA. I have had some success with reducing my AHI with weight reduction and exercise. I have come to strongly believe in the benefit of tongue and throat exercises. There are studies on the benefits. Unfortunately, most of the studies are on older people with more severe OSA, but there were a couple of small studies on pediatric patients with very good results. The exercises are easy, and I think a 7 year old might enjoy doing some of them. If you're interested, I could point you to some of the information.

RE: 7 year old newly diagnosed with sleep apnea
I do have experience with sleep aids for my kids (not apnea related at all).

Melatonin didn't work for my kid, but I had the hardest time figuring out why. I finally went to a dr who figured out that my kid's sleep issues were due to needing calcium. So we've supplemented with some calcium, and also made an effort to eat more calcium-rich foods (spinach, broccoli, etc.), and now sleep is good!

I know magnesium to help with sleep (and twitches) as well.

There are foods to eat in the later half of the day, which help the body get ready to sleep. I forget what those are, but I think if you do a search here or on the web you can find them. I think it's part of a good "sleep diet" ("diet" is used in a broad sense, but also includes food tips).

I don't have any faith in the allopathic doctors with regards to helping the body heal without the strong meds. They have no problem saying Miralax and Tylenol are completely safe (with side effects such as internal bleeding, liver damage!) but talk about magnesium supplements and I have had atleast 3 pediatricians say that is not recommended, can be dangerous and nobody needs those.  Oh-jeez

Don't get me wrong - I am an engineer and completely believe in science and meds. I just find the allopathic drs so close- minded.

Thanks Mogy! I actually tried magnesium glycinate for a bit and it made me super jumpy and I could not fall asleep which was so weird. I was wondering if magnesium would relax things in the throat more and cause more 'collapsing'/apneas. Not sure if that makes sense.

@Hydrangea - if you don't mind, how did you find that calcium was missing? We have had the blood test for calcium which showed he was at the high end for calcium. That in itself was so bizarre because he was on the low end about 8 months ago and we have been dairy free since then but his blood work showed high but normal calcium! The one nutritionist I talked to said blood calcium levels are not that trustworthy but I had not heard that one before. She says no matter what the tests say, since he is dairy free, I should be supplementing with calcium. So confusing!

Oooh, that's a naive doctor. I'd love to talk to her about bioavailability of calcium in dark green leafy foods vs how dairy products leech calcium from our bodies.  That sounds like an untrustworthy doctor.

The doctor I went to uses Zyto, which finds imbalances in the body.  She was able to determine that it's calcium - specifically calcium lactate - that was needed for my kid's sleep issues.

I think I showed signs of it when at primary school (Junior) as I was always a bit more tired then others, but it was never picked up for the most active part of my life.

I know a guy that fell asleep on a motorbike and ran up on top of a stone wall, travelled 40yds along the top then landed in a field.
How can you fall asleep on a motorbike?   Thinking-about
I am NOT a doctor.  I try to help, but do not take what I say as medical advice.

Zyto is a scam. It does not give reproducible results and invokes the uncertainty principle of quantum mechanics to explain this. Anybody who has done high school physics will see right through this mumbo-jumbo. Read this: https://www.devicewatch.org/reports/zyto/overview.shtml

But remember - don't believe everything you see on the internet!

I respect your perspective.
Most of our Zyto findings have been validated by blood tests and such (which have been done by a different doctor).
Additionally, WRT to this sleep issue with my child, no other doctors were able to find a remedy to help with the sleep issues.  So thank goodness for that scam that was able to figure it out.
