A Comedy of Errors ... or How I got my AutoSet

There was a previous thread where we identified the requirements for Apap mandated by the government in Ontario. It included min pressures and a difference of pressures sleeping from side to supine position. These were the guidelines doctors have to abide by to prescribe Apap, was an interesting read.
That's ADP requirements only. The ADP has it's own forms for the doctor to sign and is very structured. If you go outside the ADP, for example to buy on-line in the U.S., your doctor can write a prescription outside of the ADP. Otherwise yes, each province has it's own rules, pretty much including no rules at all other than a PAP machine must be treated is a class 2 device.

Well yeah, if you buy it outright yourself you can buy whatever you want (like anywhere in the world I presume), but ADP covers every ontarioan so I don't see why anyone would not use it, but the guidelines are interesting in that it specifically identifies why you would need auto cpap over normal cpap medically. Not just wanting it because it is a better machine.

Completely agree that the ADP is very well structured and practically eliminates being oversold a device only for profit.

I bought an AutoSet on-line as my main machine and the ADP machine as a backup.

The ambiguity comes in when the doc just prescribes a CPAP which is a general term for all the varieties of CPAP including auto CPAP, bi-level CPAP, uni-level CPAP, CPAP with and without reported efficacy data and so on. As far as I know, no doctor writes "APAP" since this is a shorthand designation that is commonly used for auto-titrating continuous positive airway pressure.

In a perfect world Resmed would only make one S9 Model (autoset) and it would make life easier for everyone.

I would be interested to know the wholesale costs of the units from Resmed. They can't be all the same or else Resmed wouldn't bother making different models the Autoset could just do everything the others can. Someones got to be making more money off certain models.

Hallelujah to your first line SnuffySleeper!

the elite does have a 'mode' setting, but, it's locked in the software so that the only option you can select is 'cpap'. the autoset model lets you pick from cpap/apap.

and the adapt lets you pick even more things Smile all depends on what software they loaded on the board, the internals are all the same.

Well, I can root and hack phones, I can't see why it's not time to learn to root and hack CPAPs. Smile

Why? You can get an Autoset/RemStar Auto through the government plan if you need it.

Not sure if I'm answering your question but I wanted two machines from the same manufacturer with one as a backup machine. The backup provided me with a duplicate of virtually every component in case of failure, and to have a machine at home and the cottage without having to move equipment back and forth.

I didn't meet the ADP criteria for APAP but the cost difference for a second hand AutoSet meant that for a few bucks more I could have the more capable machine. I now own an Elite and an AutoSet.
