A10 Whining noise?

A10 Whining noise?
Well it looks like I have the dreaded whining noise from my 3 yr old Autoset 10.  I added a new water tank…and that’s was a no go.  I checked mask , hose, filter…….no go.  A close inspection with my ear and it’s definitely coming from inside the machine.   I’m  thinking, buy a new one… then send this one in for repair and keep it as back up.    Any recommendations or different approaches?

By chance, are you using the hypoallergenic filters? I've found my CPAP will increase in sound as these filters start to clog and restrict airflow. It would be nice if this is the case and not something more serious.

No hypoallergenic filters. After a little research I found this a common problem. I actually returned a machine a 3 yrs ago with this same problem and now this one is doing it, but it’s now out of warranty. Google returns same symptoms and attempts for a fix. The word a Resmed repairman used was “ problematic “. Any reports on the new 11’s doing this?

Well I just bought some food grade silicone grease from Amazon. I’m going to remove the water tank and clean and grease those two silicone ports that butt into the tank. Maybe over time they lost some of there flexibility and are not sealing properly to the tank. Stay tuned!

RE: A10 Whining noise?
I am fairly sure one cause of this is using tap water instead of distilled water. I started doing that with my first machine and then ended up with the same failed motor/bearing whine. When using tap water the minerals create dust during humidification process and this dust gets blown back into the motor when you exhale. If your machine is like mine it will have fine does visible on both inlet and outlet side of motor. As a mechanical engineer I can all but guarantee this is the reason the manual says to use distilled water and needless to say when I got lucky and warranty covered my first machine I made sure to switch back to distilled water permanently.

I have seen youtube videos that have been able to resolve the issue by using compressed air to blow out the dust etc from motor (can attempt assembled or disassembled). It seems to only work sometimes and other times only temporarily.

I saw that same video where the guy blows out the motor with 90 psi and it worked for him. But all the comments from the people that tried it after him, were not successful.  I know dust gets in there, I did the vacuum trick that people also posted about and that didn’t do anything either.  I also have only used distilled water, never tap water. I’m taking this last shot at the tank seals and if that doesn’t work I will spring for a new one.  But thanks for the possible solution.

Does that whining rise and fall with your breathing, or is it constant? I can't offer any advice but the whine on mine follows my breath. I bought a back-up machine in case mine fails but so far it isn't too loud and I'm used to it now. I also installed a new tank on my A10 and added some lube to the ports after cleaning them, but it didn't seem to make a difference. Nor do new filters for me.

RE: A10 Whining noise?
Whatever mine is doing sounds like a different phenomenon -- when I push the water tank in after filling it sometimes I don't get it slammed in there hard enough. I can reliably make it stop either by pulling the tank out slightly and slamming it back in more forcefully (which is scary!) or I can put one hand on each side of the machine and squeeze as hard as I can. While it doesn't feel like the tub moves at all, the noise cuts off.

Anyway, worth a try before making a repair plan...

That is the way mine was, I am pretty sure it was a motor/bearing issue. If it is constant or near constant noise I would say it is more likely to be a leak related noise as air pressure doesn't fluctuate like blower operation does.

I think the correct diagnosis will be a failing pneumatic block, unfortunately.
