AHI HIGHER RECENTLY. AS MUCH AS DOUBLE MY NORM???
#21
RE: AHI HIGHER RECENTLY. AS MUCH AS DOUBLE MY NORM???
Hey dizzy1, it's not just the UK...I've noticed the same thing here in the states.  Not all doctors, but there does seem to be a trend to treat less, in other words, order less testing, order less perscriptions.  Sort of a wait and see......

I can't explain it, but my thoughts are that it's all driven by insurance companies.

Don't give up though, there are many good and caring physicians out there, you just have to find them.

My doctor said my blood pressure is a little high...
Are you on medication for the migrainous vertigo?

I had similar symptoms and diagnosed with migraine equivalents (which, I guess, has lots of different names; I don't know if it is the same thing you have). There are a number of medications that take care of it, and are used to prevent migraines, at least one of them being a blood pressure medication (propranolol). I'm going to guess that you are not on medication since you are still suffering from the symptoms. Maybe you could talk to your doctor about it?

RE: AHI HIGHER RECENTLY. AS MUCH AS DOUBLE MY NORM???
I agree with OpalRose in her statement about good caring physicians and needing to find them.

At my GP surgery there are many doctors-not all are the same even though they are supposed to employ the same ethical code. One thing I do know about the NHS is that you really do have to persist and insist on treatment if you are still suffering after a spell. Philosophically one can argue that this should not be the case but it is, so we have to find ways to deal with it. Myself is a case in point, as my overnight oximetry diagnosed only mild to moderate apnea I was not prescribed CPAP treatment initially. My brother (in Washington) who had been treated with CPAP for Sleep apnea for the last 10 years was positive that I was also suffering as he recognised all my symptoms. So I persisted and demanded more review as a result of which a MRI, neck Xray and finally overnight hospital sleep study was carried out. The rest is history........

I feel you should insist on a further look at your high blood pressure and discuss thoroughly what might causing it. If that particular doctor at your surgery is not taking you seriously, ask for another in the same surgery. If none is available, if possible, change surgeries.

Weight gain is high with sleep apnea - variety of reasons for this, so no surprise you have not managed to lose the weight re-gained recently.

Dizzy1 - clearly you are suffering so much that your Forum name is such - do persist, you only have your health to gain and nothing to lose.....

Hi many thanks for your input. I have tried betahistine, stemetil, cinnarrizine, propranolol, amytrityline and nortripyline. All with no joy and most gave me horrible side effects that I could not tolerate after a few weeks trial. The specialist neuro-otologist ENT I have been seeing every 6 months for nearly 3 years now says he can't recommend any other medication. He told me he will see me in 1 year and hopefully I will be better by then. I was very dissapointed to say the least. 4 years and some things are more bearable and some worse.

Many thanks for you advice APNEA INFANT.  I will take your advice on board. It is very difficult to leave the house never mind getting doctors to listen. I have had so many appointments the past 4 years it amazes me. At the cpap check appointment they only seem to want to see I am using the machine enough and that it brings my ahi down. They are not concerned if my ahi is still above 5ahi. They only want to see that my ahi is lower than with cpap. My sleep study my ahi was 38 diagnosing me with severe sleep apnea. I think they are happy only to see my ahi is lower with cpap and dont care if my ahi is 22 sometimes and usually above 5ahi.

I need to lose weight and do some exercise even if its 5 minutes walking a day it would be more than I do now.

I am so fed up with doctors I have even thought of buying blood pressure tablets myself and cutting out the doctor all together.

I am so sorry that you are going through that! You have my utmost sympathy. If it helps any, my sleep doctor believes that the issue will clear up with successful treatment of sleep apnea, and my neurologist concurred. So getting your treatment dialed in may (hopefully) resolve the issue for you too..?

Me too. Forum member, Fitmart, recently created a thread, A new beginners guide to sleeping with CPAP which links to his new youtube video. He did another video that I found particularly helpful (and inspirational) for weightloss. It is called, "The Easiest and Best Diet in the World... ...How to lose weight without starving." (I don't think I'm allowed to link directly to it, but a youtube search should find it easily - the channel is Fitmart Fitness)

Best of luck with the symptoms. I hope you find some relief.

RE: AHI HIGHER RECENTLY. AS MUCH AS DOUBLE MY NORM???
Last night I had the pressure at 14, left c-fex+ on and I used the Amara mask. The mask on testing seemed to handle the increased pressure better.
I did wake a few times as usual and 1 time I woke due to the strap coming undone. The head gear on most of my masks don't last long. Having my mask tight it stretches the headgear and the bottom straps get narrower. I don't find any headgear is that well designed. The velcro does not stick well when the mask is tight.

I didn't feel any leaks last night but the Amara has more vents than my other masks and I can hear the air coming out of the vents.

My ahi was lower last night but I am not sure if this is accurate as my leak rate was high. What is an acceptable leak rate for my machine?

Tight is not the right way to fit a mask. Read the Mask Primer in my signature. Try fitting your mask under pressure and holding it in place allowing the cushions to inflate. That is thet tightness you need for the straps. If you are compressing the mask into your face, the cushions will distort and leak.
