Acceptable leak #

RE: Acceptable leak #
According to the Philips Respironics Intentional leak rates chart for masks and exhalation ports, the leak rates you are showing for the Dreamwear are entirely from intentional mask leaks at the pressures you are running so your unintentional leak rate is 0 and as good as you can get.

The leak rates for the Amara View at the pressures you are running should be around 19-26 lpm so you do have some unintentional leaks with it, but not enough to worry about.

The DreamStation doesn't start reporting leaks as large leaks until the total leak rate goes above 75 lpm and considers anything below that as acceptable.

resmed calculates, and reports *excess* leak.

SH reports both Leak Rate and Total Leaks, including natural mask leaks (venting). I take it the Leak Rate represents the "unnatural" or unintentional leak rate, so that's the number to watch.

RE: Acceptable leak #
on a respironics, sleepyhead *guesses* at the excess leak rate, reported as "leak rate". in 0.9.8-1 and before a routine was used that tried to estimate a baseline leak rate, however, it had no sanity checks in it, so if you had bad leaks *all the time* then the 'leak rate' would be artificially low. for most people, this wasn't an issue.

occasionally, however there would be people with really crappy leaks, with Large Leak flags, and total leaks in the 80-100 range, and the 'leak rate' would look just fine.

in 1b1, that was all thrown out, and a linear drop from total leak (which is the only real number respironics gives) was substituted, to give a, probably, fair approximation of excess leak.

you can look at whichever one you wish, but for your machine, "total leaks" is the accurate data, and if you don't see Large Leak flags, then the machine thinks things are ok.

However, Respironics, via Dreammapper, reports large leaks when SH doesn't, so SH must not be getting its Large Leak flags from the machine itself, but must be inferring them, more conservatively, from the data.

I don't really know whether any of this is worth bothering about. I do know that my Leak Rate and Total Leaks were considerably lower with the nasal mask on the DreamStation than they are now on the PRS1 with nasal pillows. This may be an inevitable consequence of the higher pressures.

But my Nano arrived today, so a few nights of experimentation with that should make things clearer.

Looks quite comfy.

the machine flags large leaks in the data stream, SH does *NOT* infer them.

depending on what version of SH you're using you'll see LL's reported differently, 098 had a bug that reported large leaks at half the correct rate.

I have a very similar setup (Dreamstation + Dreamwear), with prescription setting at 9-12. SleepyHead shows the typical leak rate around 24-25.
