[Admin Note] New SleepyHead Automatic Windows Installer
#1
~ New SleepyHead Automatic Windows Installer ~

Howdy folks,

The SleepyHead beta testing team (specifically beta-tester AlanE) has created an automatic Windows installer for SleepyHead (an ".exe" file). This is something that members have been requesting for a long time now.

The SleepyHead Download Page has been updated with this new Windows Installer, here:

Nothing has changed with the program itself. This is still JediMark's 0.9.8-1-T3-testing version for Windows. So if you already have version 0.9.8-1-T3-testing installed, you don't need to update using this Windows Installer.

Some notes:

1. The Windows Installer is a large file (twice the size of the zip files at about 81.4 MB) because it includes both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of SleepyHead.

2. The installer automatically checks your computer's operating system to see if it's either a 32 or 64-bit system, and then automatically installs either a 32 or 64 bit copy of SleepyHead on your computer.

3. The installer includes shortcuts to both the OpenGL and BrokenGL versions in the Windows Start Menu, but places a shortcut on your desktop to the default OpenGL version (which is the preferred option). After the installation, I suggest trying the OpenGL version and if it doesn't work for you, simply use the BrokenGL version that is linked in the Windows Start Menu.

4. The old Windows compressed zip installation files also remain on the download page as an alternative installation option for those who wish to manually install SleepyHead.

Many thanks to the SleepyHead beta testing team for all their efforts on this! The installer works amazingly well and AlanE really put a lot of work into making it seamless and easy to install SleepyHead with the least amount of problems for all Windows platforms. Thanks Alan!!

I've asked Alan to post a reply following this post to further explain the installation process and other things.

Thanks!

Coffee

Here is a step-by-step guide to installing the program

Once you download the program, locate the file in the folder where you saved it. Double-Click on the file to run the installer.

If the User Account Control dialog box appears (example shown below) please answer Yes.

When the installer appears, the first box asks you to choose from the languages available. This is the language for the installer only. It defaults to English. After selecting the language, press OK to continue.

The language selection for SleepyHead will come later when you run the program.

Please read and agree to the SleepyHead license agreement by clicking on
I accept the terms of the License Agreement box and clicking Next.

On the next box you can select which components to install. The Sleepyhead files are required and cannot be deselected. It is recommended that you keep the default selections.
Click Next.

You can change the folder to copy the files into if the default is not acceptable. It is recommended you keep the default selection here.
Click the Install button.

When the install has finished, please click on the Close button.

Locate the SleepyHead icon on your desktop and double-click this icon to start using SleepyHead. Enjoy!

For questions on how to use SleepyHead, please visit this link: http://www.apneaboard.com/wiki/index.php...SleepyHead

If you find that you cannot run the OpenGL version of SleepyHead and you need to use the BrokenGL version, you can find the icon for this in the Start Menu group for SleepyHead. To create an icon on the desktop for the BrokenGL, right click the icon in the start menu group, hover your mouse over Send to and click on Desktop (create shortcut).

If you have any problems with the installer, please post your question in the Software Support Forum.

Thanks,
Alan

Glad to see this improvement to the Sleepyhead program that makes it accessible to so many that don't find computers second nature. Well done AlanE, a great service to the community and future users of SH.

Hi,

I installed the latest version with the installer.

When I try to open it I get a .dll error. It said that MSVCR120.dll is not installed.
I searched and found 2 on my computer.

I copied it to the sleepyhead directory - now when I try to open it says "Program did not open correctly, close the program"

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Eric

Hi Eric, some versions of Windows do not have the necessary DLL files installed, and you can only get them by using Microsoft's installer, not by copying and pasting a file into the SleepyHead directory.

After you read the note that Alan pointed to above, you'll need to click on the Microsoft link to install the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable Package. After you get to that page, simply click on the red "Download" button, after which you'll see three possible files for you to install. Only one of them is the correct one for your system.

The options are:

1. vcredist_arm.exe - This one is only for computers with ARM processors. If you have no idea what that is, it's likely this is not the one for your computer.

2. vcredist_x64.exe - This is the one if you're running a 64-bit version of Windows.

3. vcredist_x86.exe - This is the one if you're running a 32-bit version of Windows.

If you're not sure whether you have 32 or 64-bit Windows, click here for more info on that.

So, if you're missing the DLL files, you'll need to download and install only one of the above files listed on that Microsoft Download Page in order to properly install the missing DLL files onto your computer.

After you install the correct choice out of those three, let us know if this worked for you.

The fact that MicroShaft can get away with things like forced updates in Win10 is one of the reasons I think modern society is doomed.
