Adverse Affects Possible From Wrong Prescribed Pressure?

RE: Adverse Affects Possible From Wrong Prescribed Pressure?
Then I suggest you have a lung capacity test. It's actually very easy and shouldn't cost much more than a regular visit. It's what they do for asthma folks. They have a cardboard tube, not quite as large as a toilet paper core. You then, blow in it. The cardboard slides out and is measured. If something shows up there, then they can move on.

I have this done a lot due to asthma.

Hi Tim,

Especially if the lung collapse was "spontaneous" (not caused by a physical accident) I would suggest you make sure your sleep doctor knows (and keeps in mind, doesn't forget). If it was caused by a car accident or something, I would guess it (lung collapse) would be less likely to occur again.

I think you can buy a lung capacity tester cheap, to start monitoring your lung capacity, and, when you are feeling short of breath, you might be able to use the lung capacity tester to verify whether your lung capacity is worse than your earlier measurements.

I wouldn't be scared or anything, but I would call my doctor's office to inform him/her about my present symptoms and past lung collapse and ask whether I should have my lung capacity tested or anything special.

Take care,
--- Vaughn

Hi Vaughn, Just woke up one morning with a collapsed lung. Not sure of the cause. I did smoke but quit on May 14th, 1991, (been smoke free since), a few weeks before the collapse, boy was I teased about that one, two weeks later my lung collapses! Too-funny

Hi Tim,

My ex-wife has had a spontaneous collapsed lung, 3 times. Twice in one lung and once in the other. Doctors told her it is caused by weak spots in the lungs, and it may never occur again, so they do not operate to prevent it from occurring again, until it has happened 3 times.

Upon the 3rd time, the doctors wanted to do an extensive procedure to fix her lungs, by going in, looking for weak spots and "popping" all the weak spots, so scar tissue would form. After the lungs heal the weak spots would be gone, replaced by scar tissue. But she has not had this done yet.

I don't know if a history of collapsed lung might warrant extra watchfulnes to avoid high xPAP pressures, but I suspect maybe so. Then again, maybe a strong cough might create lung pressures much higher than anything an xPAP machine can produce. I don't know.

But if I ever get any unusual pain in a lung or shortness of breath, I would get it checked out right away.

Take care,
--- Vaughn

RE: Adverse Affects Possible From Wrong Prescribed Pressure?
I am no expert, I have been on CPAP for about 10 months now... and I felt like it was harder to breathe in the day time, and still do when I turn off my machine, I almost feel addicted to it! I actually like the feeling of being able to breathe when it's on. When i first put it on (the first few weeks) it was really hard to breathe against the flow but I do think it's a mind thing, because all of a sudden I felt like the machine isn't working but it is! If I take my mask off the air blasts out, I just can't feel it any more, but it feels comfortable and I miss it during the day time.

I started on auto and found that the average was 14 so that is where I had my pressure set and really like the constant flow better than waking up to it ramping up... I do feel better on a set pressure but know others think differently.

Hope you get this resolved... good luck

Hi Paula, At least I can type without being short of breathCoffee. You were right, they did a lung capacity test, I failed terribly, not my fault, they did it three times and I did my best! I just wasn't happy with doing it three times after the first one was so hard!Dont-know
Leaving now for a xray, then I have to go to a Pulmonary specialist. Just hope I don't have to wait for weeks for results, after all, I have a lot to do although I can't get much done lately!Too-funny I'll post results soon or add them to my growing list, this is a new one for me!

Thank you, I am hoping it gets resolved or at the least some answers of whats going on. I have to admit, I really like the EPR function and pressure settings, 6-12cm. It looks like I may need to raise the 12 though. My high is hitting 11.9 with ReScan, 11.88 with SleepyHead. I'll wait til actually hits the 12 before going up a notch or two! Appreciate the reply!
