Alternative to BD syringes? Cost too high
#1
Last year, I paid $.18 per BD insulin syringe (with insurance.) This year, I'm now paying $.25 per syringe with insurance. That's just too expensive considering the number I use and the annual cost. Seems like they should cost about $.10 So, I'm using each one two or three times.

Are there alternative brands?

Why in the world would be needles cost more with insurance? How much does your insurance cover? Have you checked online suppliers for discount pricing?

I get 150 per month. The retail price is $37.39. I paid $37.39 while my part D Rx plan from that insurance company that just got hacked paid zero. They get to play around with "tiers." These are in a tier that has a $40 copay. So, I pay full freight.
On top of that insult, they still get to claim the $37.39 as counting toward my hitting the doughnut hole!

It seems BD is the only supplier of insulin syringes. I was hoping for a cheaper alternative.
So, I shall be forced to double and triple use these single use syringes.

This entire Part D was written to favor insurance companies.

Also, the CMS for Medicare, after years of testing 5 times per day, now says I may only test 3 times per day.
I've written an appeal -- big whoop! Some stinkin' bureaucrat is practicing medicine without a license.
They save a little money now; and pay later when diabetic complications have to be treated.

This is the first year I've not had my Medigap and Part D coverage from my former employer.
There was no doughnut hole in the coverage they provided. But, they dropped all salaried retirees and setup an HRA instead.
Finding what a bad deal it is, I wrote to the CEO suggesting they not ask for help from retirees like me who know presently fielded systems inside and out, when one has an anomaly ( and they do.) I got a little action from that -- but nothing really changed.

Where do I go to turn in my US Passport end renounce my citizenship?

Tongue Suck Technique for prevention of mouth breathing:
  • Place your tongue behind your front teeth on the roof of your mouth
  • let your tongue fill the space between the upper molars
  • gently suck to form a light vacuum
Practising during the day can help you to keep it at night

BD isn't the only supplier of insulin syringes. Newegg, for example, has the EasyTouch brand (via a wholesaler) for $11.95 per box of 100. It says $5.95 shipping, but I stuck 3 boxes in my cart and shipping for all three was $8.79. So, under 15 cents per syringe if you get a couple months worth at a time...less than you used to pay.

There are other brands out there - Covidien, Terumo - but the ones on Newegg are the cheapest I found just browsing around quickly, and are actually about what I could get them for via the supplier we use to stock our practice.

You might also look for coupon/promo codes for the various online sites you see that carry them - % off, free shipping, etc. If you find a good coupon code for the site you're buying from, you could save a bit more that way, even if the base price there is higher.

Just curious? Where would you go? Up north, or across the pond...

I have some friends in Uruguay that seem to have found a better answer. Low costs, expatriot status and still get Medicare. The Europe of South America.

I'd go to Vietnam before central or south America.
There's a large community of expats in Vietnam.
U.S. Dollars go a long way there.
