It is not actually how much water, but when they get the water. If the plant gets more water when the tomatoes are yellow/orange they will split when turning red, unless you pick them, and let them turn red off the vine.

If you water the tomatoes heavy when they are green and cut back on the water when they turn orange, they won't split.

When I was a kid I picked tomatoes in the summer when school was out and was always amazed how the soap turned green at the end of the day. But I also remember how they would have us cover the ripening tomatoes when the rains were coming, to prevent the splitting.

At the end of the growing season and when the 'white' stuff is anticipated, my husband and I will pick all the green tomatoes and wrap them in newspaper, place them on a flat surface in the garage where it is not expected to freeze and "voila" - after a short period of time we have red tomatoes.....preferably while we are complaining about the cold weather and the snow. We have an OK harvest of pineapple this year. About a dozen so far but they are not that big. They are getting ripe at an early stage.

Beautiful pineapple. I've never seen one except in the store. Can you give any tips on how to choose a ripe one from among those that might not be so ripe at the store?

Uh...the store "frowns" on people carrying knives into their store and 'sampling' the produce. Laugh-a-lot

I was told that the way to tell a ripe one is the color and smell. If you can smell it, it's starting to ripen. When it turns yellow it is just about as good as it will get. Very sweet. I picked two recently that were all yellow and they were good eating.

Here's my pineapple "garden". more weeds than plants here but trying to weed around pineapple plants requires armor... Rolleyes

14 plants growing here. The plant just beyond the pineapple and before the Acalypha is Rosemary gone wild.

I have another 3 pineapple plants growing in an old washing machine tub and another 3 growing in a planter out front.
