Apnea Acronyms

RE: Apnea Acronyms
(04-13-2012, 09:17 PM)PaulaO2 Wrote: This is the current wording:

Quote:Bi-Flex - Respironic's name for exhalation pressure relief for BiPAP
BiPAP - bi-level machine made by Respironics
BPAP - bilevel positive airway pressure; not to be confused with BiPAP

Is it close enough for the acronym page? Granted, people will go there to determine the difference. I hate it when the dictionary says stuff like

I think that's pretty close. But then again, my brain hurts from all this. Fever

Paula: I use both Sleepyhead and ResScan and can't really think of anything else that isn't already on the list. If you want to be technically correct, officially Resmed's definition of EPR according to my manual is Expiratory Pressure Relief rather than Exhale (although Exhale my be easier for people to understand).

Exhalation pressure relief is the generic term, and is abbreviated EPR.

Expiratory Pressure Relief is a ResMed-specific term, and is also abbreviated EPR.

As to any significant difference, in the overall scope of things that are important in life, this difference probably doesn't matter a whole lot though, other than to give Paula an excruciating headache when trying to finalize this acronym list. Too-funny

Perhaps those Respironics BiPAP's were in use for a long time as ventillators in hospitals? That might be the reason why "bipap" has entered the lexicon used by health professionals as a synonym for any bilevel machine. Just like "kleenex" is used as a synonym for any type of tissue used for blowing noses.

I was hoping to find a fun discussion of Apnea Acronyms, instead I find a serious discussion of apnea terminology. I'm beginning to think you people do not know how to have fun. Unsure

They're stopping the printed edition. Sad. I dislike ebooks.

I need SLEEP related acronyms that we would normally come across.

RE: Apnea Acronyms
Paula, in case you're not tired of getting new suggestions, the business card of the lady who performed my sleep study has the following after her name. I got the meanings in my conversation with her:

RRT - registered respiratory technician
RPSGT - registered polysomnography technician
Breathing keeps you alive. And PAP helps keep you breathing!
