Bronchiectasis

Bronchiectasis
Just a shout out to any forum members who have been diagnosed with bronchiectasis and are on CPAP. Has CPAP affected your condition in a positive way? Do you find that is has any benefit in reducing sputum production during the night and does that flow on to daytime? Anything else to share would be good. I was diagnosed with bronchiectasis and a colonized NTM lung infection just short of five years ago and three months later I was diagnosed with sleep apnea @ an AHI of 47. Double whammy! I am doing pretty well and I would be interested in any other members journey.

RE: Bronchiectasis
I also have those 2 conditions plus COPD, asthma and emphysema. I am managing well, just as long as I don't over exert myself. My NTM is contained and it has not caused any symptoms. I get a yearly CT scan for that.

I can not say that cpap treatment has helped but my gut feeling is that it has. When I suffer with nasal congestion because of a cold or hayfever, I would say that cpap treatment definitely helps with that. I think it makes it easier just to breathe at night and it keeps my O2 levels up. I believe that the treatment keeps you physically and mentally more healthy which will help in keeping control of other physical problems.

Have you ever been treated for your NTM? From what I hear it is a year treatment with multiple strong antibiotics. I am told it's like going through chemotherapy.

No treatment for me so far, just colonization. I have MAC (Mycobacterium Avium Complex) and my specialist here in Australia is happy to wait and see how I go. Treatment is multi drug and typically lasts 12 to 18 months. Some cope well and some don't.  I think I was lucky to be diagnosed with sleep apnea as I get good oxygen levels during the night now, so that helps with the bronchaectasis fatigue when I have a exacerbation. I have had  a few hospital stays with pneumonia but I seem to recover OK. So far, so good  anyway.  I hope that you continue to feel OK, as you are carrying quite a load there.
