CPAP & COVID-19 - JUST WONDERING

RE: CPAP & COVID-19 - JUST WONDERING
Stress levels have been significantly higher for everyone these days.... that's bound to affect AHI, I would think.

The virus plus the economic aftermath is having a very real negative impact.

RE: CPAP & COVID-19 - JUST WONDERING
My AHIs have been bouncing all over the place although most are still well below 5. Haven't had a chance to look at the data in OSCAR yet with the other projects I have going. I can say this, the number of weird dreams (not nightmares) have increased.

We get a daily walk up to the corner to get our mail, and I will be making a grocery run when I pick up my wife;s meds later this week. Can't get them mailed because they are controlled. I also get to go do a building check about once a week as I am considered a building manger and the building is for a charitable organization. I also get any mail that has been delivered. When I am done there, I am the only one in the building 99% of the time. Made a deposit at the bank Monday and had to remember how to use the pneumatic tube at the drive up teller. The bank was wiping down the container between users.

I rode the motorcycle and had no problems, but I heard that groups of bikers are being pulled over. Me wife and I were on the bike trail the other day and it was crazy busy. We do daily walks in the neighborhood and lots of people are out enjoying the good weather.

Unlike Supersleeper, I remain optimistic and relatively unstressed. While I’m in a “high risk” category for age and weight, my fatalistic side says we’ve been through worse.

I have tended to be like the Stoics of old.  I am both optimistic and pessimistic, but mostly fatalistic.  Or maybe realistic.  It'll happen no matter how hard I squint or hop over cracks in the sidewalk.  I'll do what seems sensible or obvious and hope that I am spared the worst of it for my troubles.

I saw earlier today that some group is strongly discouraging the use of CPAP machines,....I seem to think it was about firefighters, maybe even here in British Columbia.  The aerosolization phenomenon and spread of the virus has the medical authorities worried that the machines will spread the virus around entire rooms where the firefighters are sleeping if on the night shift.

They go on to say that those who do have to sleep with them are forthwith precluded from night shifts; only daytime duties for them.

I don't think I've been closer than 20 feet to anyone in the last couple of weeks and only briefly.

California craziness. The parks are closed and people are restricted from the local paths and trails. Even walking up and down the block brings a warning from the same Sheriffs operating out of the same station that arrested the Malibu paddleboarder who was out in the ocean. Intercepted by two boats, four individuals -- 2 lifeguards, 2 sheriffs in boats. Arrested and escorted by two sheriffs without protective gear as they walked him, handcuffed, to their patrol car.

OMG...That is so good. Not good in the good sense, but at showing the looniesism of things. I think CA went covid extreme after the other loonies were holding large gathering in the parks parking lots and all that went national.

We have had the same problem here in Detroit with huge parties of loonies and now several parks have officers stationed at them.

Anyway, my AHI's are better or the same as I really haven't changed much in my life. They are better due to the weather here in SE Mich getting better and I am outdoors more.

You have to have projects...tune up the motors, sharpen the mower blades, clean out the pole barn, etc. Always something to do..!
In the frigged dark cold winter my AHI's will rise a bit as I am a bit more sedentary. You just don't sleep as well overall if your not active.

Good luck in CA and I sure hope it gets better.

I did hear, don't know if its true, CA is or has gotten the virus under control??

Maybe extreme times just call for extreme measures?

I'm optimistic, of course, but I do think it's way too early to proclaim victory and let our guard down due to an apparent slow-down in new cases over the past 3 days.  That number can go right back up again at the turn of a hat.  You don't measure trends using daily fluctuations, and even if we do reach the top of the curve, there's always a chance that this particular curve is only the first wave, and like the 1918 Spanish Flu, the second wave was the real killer.

Supersleeper I agree, but we already won the war of the curve for sensitive and vulnerable individuals, or soon will. More time with social distancing mitigation measures will drive it down further. The curve is much lower than predicted, with few urban exceptions. People at high risk need to continue to isolate, but provided they are safe, we are better off if our children and grandchildren acquire the antibodies. There is no promise a vaccine will emerge. The greater the population that is immunized by enduring the virus, the less likely we will encounter it. No airborne respiratory virus has an effective vaccine. The hydroxychloraquin Zpak combo seems to reduce symptoms, and may be our best hope since the earliest potential vaccine is 18 months out. We have come so far, but still live by the rules of survival of the fittest.

"Already won the war of the curve"?  Really??

Here are the charts for total cases of COVID-19, current as of yesterday... (first is worldwide, second is U.S.)... can you point out the flat part of the curve?

RE: CPAP & COVID-19 - JUST WONDERING
By the way, I'm not trying to panic anyone, or sound overly pessimistic... and I really want you to be right about the curve flattening out...

But I'm really trying to figure out where people who say the curve is flattening are getting their data.  It sure looks to me like they're zoomed in to a small subset of 3-5 days worth of data, a scale that is a deceptively small dataset to use in forming any sort of conclusion with regard to the curve being flattened.

Zoom out to the larger picture, showing the trend over the past 2 months, and the curve shows no significant flattening at all.  Now, when those charts above clearly demonstrate a flattening, then I'll concede that we actually have flattened the curve.  But drawing conclusions based upon 2-3 day's worth of data (or even a week's worth) and extrapolating any sort of reliable future projection from that is just plain bad statistical reasoning as far as I can see.

A few comments...
(1)  The charts are meaningless as they are a function of testing and ignore those who are asymptomatic or not presenting for testing. Therefore, anyone that uses this data to calculate a fatality rate will be incorrect because the denominator will always be incorrect.
(2)  The reported fatalities are suspect because we are seeing public health departments ordering physicians to change death certificates to indicate anyone who dies -- and may be suspected of having COVID-19, even without a test or any confirming information -- must be reported as a COVID-19 death.
(3)  We are seeing anecdotal evidence that some deaths were actually caused by lung damage from ventilators with improper settings and that oxygen therapy may be preferable to ventilators.
(4)  The real numbers I want to see are recoveries using drugs or transfused blood with antibodies.
(5) The flattening of the curve relates to hospital beds and ventilators and has little to do with survival rates.
As someone in the ultra high-risk cohort (age plus more than 3 comorbidities), statistics are irrelevant because it is personal if something happens to me or a loved one. Even if the various rules and regulations are relaxed, we must continue to be cautious because of asymptomatic spreaders and the virus's life on surfaces.
