CPAP vs BiPAP
What is the difference between a CPAP and a BIPAP?

RE: CPAP vs BiPAP
A CPAP produces a fixed pressure, whereas a BPAP produces different pressure at inhale vs at exhale. Now, complicating the issue is that modern CPAP machines implement an "exhale relief" feature (ResMed calls it EPR, Respironics calls it CFlex) whereby the pressure is lowered by up to 3 cmH2O when the machine detects an exhale.

The basic difference is that the inhale/exhale pressure difference on a CPAP machine is limited to 3 cmH2O, whereas a BPAP machine can have that difference up to 10 cmH2O. In addition, CPAP machines tend to be limited to a maximum pressure of 20 cmH2O, whereas BPAP machines tend to go up to 25 cmH2O.

Strictly speaking, "BiPAP" is the Respironics name for their BPAP (Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure) machines. According to Wikipedia, "BPAP" is the accepted generic term. I believe it is also called "VPAP" by some manufacturers.

Oh, and BPAP machines will be more expensive.

RE: CPAP vs BiPAP
beside cost, both treat obstructive apnea. ASV machines treat central apnea and other respiratory issues

the difference between inhale (IPAP) and exhale (EPAP) pressures of BIPAP (pressure support) can be set higher than CPAP expiratory pressure relief which can help someone who require high pressure or/and cannot tolerate breathing out against the pressure

should be one machine does all three modes ... CPAP, APAP, and bi-level
