[CPAP] My 16 year old started with an APAP last night.

My 16 year old started with an APAP last night.
As Nat had no titration done his sleep specialist said to start him on an APAP for a couple of weeks to get levels and then go to a CPAP.
We got the machine yesterday, have a review appointment with the sleep clinic in a week to go over how he went. The sleep clinic in town is owned by a local pharmacist who was always heavily into organics and he made a lot of his own potions. One for colic that sold all over Australia and was featured on a current affair show. He sold his pharmacy and opened an organic shop, which is naturopaths and a sleep clinic. My sleep specialist does not sell or supply CPAPs but refers to other places and said this clinic (which I would have used as I trust the man who owns it) was where he would recommend in Horsham. It was just another 10 day delay to get in.
So we took home a Fisher and Paykel APAP, with a full face mask, Nat was happy with the full face mask and may try nose ones later but he was happier covering all bases to start with.
At 920 last night he asked me to help him set it up. He was asleep at 930, he woke a bit after midnight (not unusual but not an everyday occurence) and went to the toilet, went back to sleep and told me he woke again at 430 (which is unusual) and went to the toilet again, and decided not to put it back on for an hour and a half. He woke about 630, got out of bed at 730 and was stumbling everywhere (this is not an unusual occurrence, but we are hoping good sleep will cure this) so I kept him home.
I still think 7 hours with the APAP first night is a reasonable start,
Nat has ataxia, which is a balance disorder that is coming and going, and getting worse, this has happened since he first noted his tiredness, and we are hopeful his ataxia may abate with sleep, but will not know for a while.

I wish you all the best. I am concerned about using an auto-pap for tritation and the going to a straight cpap. Why?

I use my PAP machine nightly and I feel great!

Dont know. just what the sleep specialist recommended. We have regular appointments at the sleep clinic and a joint appoinment with sleep clinic and specialist in December, so I figure if he needs a full titration study we can get it done, if he doesnt thats good, but in the mean time he is getting some sleep support.

That sounds like a pretty good first night to me. Wish mine was as good as that! Well done Nat

Pudel, it's hard in the country to find Sleep Specialists, I'm glad your son had a good experience the first night, it only gets better from here Smile
I would think he would have set it with the widest range possible 4 - 20, your lucky he got an Auto CPAP and it will adjust as he needs it.
Is the Sleep Specialist in Horsham or do you go to Melbourne to see him?

I haven't heard of ataxia before but Sleep Apnea can cause a lot of other illness's and hopefully he will get better from using his CPAP.
A couple suggestions for Nat, tell him to stay positive and probably the most important thing is he to use it every night, unfortunately forever, I hope it improves but it is just a treatment not a cure, if he goes off it his symptoms will return pretty much straight away.

Wish him luck and keep us updated or he can get on here and ask his own questions Smile

Given the minimal cost difference between a CPAP and auto CPAP it makes no sense not to simply prescribe the auto, which will continue to adapt therapy to the patient. It would be ideal to see him on the Resmed Airsense 10 Autoset which is made in Australia, is a fully auto and data capable unit that would tell you and your doctor exactly how effective Nat's treatment is. It would record breath by breath, all events and pressure changes during the night and allow truly effective treatment and optimization.

I know Australia is a third world country for CPAP, but it's really sad to see young people pay the price of saving a few bucks, by issuing them fixed, non-data CPAPs when they could be much better served by a top of the line Auto CPAP made in their own country.

RE: My 16 year old started with an APAP last night.
Last night he went to bed, we put on the mask, he woke an hour or so later, got a drink, then went back to bed and forgot to put the mask on. Grrr.
Yesterday was a really bad day for ataxia symptoms, he had 2 attacks including one when he fell over and fell of a bench. Wondering if an increase in symptoms may be caused by his body wanting more sleep due to getting better sleep, so waiting and seeing. Ataxia can also cause a weakening of throat muscles so can cause sleep apnea.
