[CPAP] New, ResSleep Australia

Just the last few months there has been a lot of ads on TV and radio for some of the pharmacy's, drugstores, saying that they are your cpap specialist. Can only imagine what advice they would provide.
ResMed sure don't do any favors for their fellow Aussies .

RE: New, ResSleep Australia
ResSleep is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Resmed, so they need to offer the machine at full RRP to avoid under-cutting their re-sellers. Having said that, the price of all Resmed and Philips sleep equipment here (at all outlets) is horribly inflated. You should shop around for a better price -there are a number of on-line Australian sellers who can beat that price and will be able to provide service and back-up.

If you do buy from the States, please bear the following in mind:

1. The sticker price is likely to be around half what you'd pay in Australia.

2. The sticker price would be in US$, with the exchange rate currently being around AU$1.00 = US$0.74

3. You have to add in the cost of postage

4. There is no GST or import duty but there will be a $50 customs handling fee

6. If you buy locally you may get a rebate from your private health fund. These vary between $300 and up to $1200 depending on the fund and which ancillaries cover you have. You would need to check with your fund as to the rebate, and whether they would give a rebate for a machine purchased overseas.

7. If you buy from the States Resmed Australia may not honour their warranty - even if the machine was made here.

8. I assume the machine you are currently using is on hire and the hire charge would be deducted from the purchase price - this is what the ResSleep website states.

You need to weigh all that up to arrive at the money value of getting a machine from the US as opposed to buying locally.

If you stick around this forum you will find there are plenty of people with knowledge and skills to provide the support you need.

Good luck with your decision.

Be careful buying from abroad.

The Airsense 10 machine has the reputation to be uneven when it comes to manufacturing standards. Some are very noisy, some are quiet.

I had to exchange the last one I got as it was noisy (and noise was coming into the mask), and the next one was fine.

If you are unlucky, you may have to exchange the machine.

you have your respiratory doctor? If not, get one, for at least annual check ups. either privately or through hospital outpatients. you can also get a cpap rebate from a private fund.
The providers aren't worth keeping. I'd buy online from AU or US.
while you are renting the machine, try as many masks as you can.

For auto-cpap, from machine data or software. You can set the min pressure 1 or 2cm below 95%. Or clinicians commonly use the maximum or 95% pressure for fixed pressure CPAP, this can also be used for min pressure.

From the Mask Primer (in my signature) if you haven't read it there is a lot about masks and using them in there including mouth breathing solutions.

A Mask Trial Strategy
First, even a mouth breather may be able to use ANY style of mask, even the simplest, most unobtrusive, Nasal Pillow.

Try masks from the most unobtrusive to the biggest bulkiest of masks. This would typically be starting with Nasal Pillows, Nasal Mask, Hybrid Masks, then finally the Full Face Mask. The smaller masks that you start with leave you with less mask on your face and more visibility.
Finally, as I have said before, you have to try masks on, under pressure, and preferably lying down in sleeping position.

I am currently renting a Resmed airsense 10 for a one month trial, then if it works for me ResSleep want me to purchase the machine through them for $2500. Obviously I'd rather source one myself to get a better price, but then I don't think I can get the support from ResSleep anymore. Is the support from someone like that important, or if I purchase my own machine elsewhere what's my best way of getting alternative support?
Finding the right mask is important at this stage, I suggest that you try different masks and how to fit them correctly during the renting period so you can buy them elsewhere at a lower prices, I get my supplies from Supplier #10
AirSense 10 AutoSet for Her http://www.resmed.com/au/en/consumer/pro...r-her.html
Here is the setup link  http://www.apneaboard.com/resmed-airsens...setup-info and how to get the clinical manual, tells you everything you need to know about the machine which they hide it from you so you keep going back to them, even when changing clock to daylight saving time ... the right information is the key to success and empowerment
Links to SleepyHead and ResScan software (both support AirSense 10) http://www.apneaboard.com/forums/Forum-P...-and-Links

If you have health insurance that cover CPAP machines, then buying the machines locally makes sense but the quoted price $2500 is expensive, check Supplier #22 and cpap direct, about $500 cheaper for the same machine (AirSense 10 AutoSet for Her)
Buying the machine from US supplier have no health fund rebate or warranty in Australia, have to be sent back for warranty issues. ResMed is a good reputable brand, machines are rarely have a serious problem, most complaints are to do with noise which can apply to all CPAP machines regardless of the manufacturer, what quiet for someone, can be noisy for someone else. Unless I'm mistaken, neither local supplier or ResMed going replace a machine based solely on noise complaints (US insurance is a different story)
I've Bupa cover, bought two machines online and haven't claimed any rebates, rebate only apply to machines but not to masks or anything else, that's has to change ....

you could use a reshipper and get a DreamStation Auto Cpap DSX500T11 with Heated Humidifier & Heated Tubing off of amazon for US$360 + 100 handling and shipping, with another 50 odd when it arrives.
that is a bargain
