What a great positive side effect it is.
On JesseLee's recommendation I'm going to consult my Dr before dropping my meds.
I'm on 20mg daily of Esomeprazole RBX which is a pretty mild dose. I'd love to come off them completely aa they can be nasty in the long term.

Cheers !

Chill actually recommended that, and I agree with Chill. If you have any damage to your esophagus as a result of reflux, you don't want to risk any further damage. The sophagus takes a long time to heal my friend.

RE: CPAP and Gastric Reflux
I've been on acid reflux meds for about 2 years now. Alas, cpap didn't help at all, but there are multiple causes for acid reflux. Glad yours has improved. I agree with the others that you need to step down slowly from acid reflux meds if you've taken them for more than about 4 months.

I'm stuck on the acid reflux meds for probably another year or two, then hopefully can taper off them then. It's a side effect from another medication I take to preserve my eyesight. Risk vs. benefit thing.

Hi there,
I've been on mine for about 10 years after being diagnosed with severe ulcerative esophagitis. I was on 40mg of Esomeprazole fpr a few years then after a subsequent Gastroscopy my specialist dropped me to 20mg. A diet change cutting out acidic foods and laying off the Jim Beams and cola also helped.

Good luck with your treatment

Cheers.

I cant drink cola anymore. Its like drinking acid(and seriously, it is acid anyway....)
I try to keep it to one coffee a day, two is too much, and 3 just burns.
Im on 40mg pantoprazole(canada name?) a day.

I had forgotten it 1-2 days and i woke up with heartburn this night and took it plus 2 gaviscon pills, so oh well... cpap didnt cure gerd.

RE: CPAP and Gastric Reflux
cams290,

Welcome to Apnea Board and congrats on CPAP helping with sleep apnea, of course, and also with GERD. Best wishes on getting away from the meds for GERD; sounds like you've gotten good advice from others already on being weaned off of the meds.

I have to be one of those contrary, complicates-things-to-the-opposite kind of guys. I think my xPAP therapy contributes to my GERD somewhat, and it looks like I'll be needing to ask for a new script from the specialist weight loss surgeon that did my bariatric sleeve weight loss surgery. GERD was almost gone for a while, but it has returned. My primary care physician had me on a GERD med (pantoprazole AKA protonix - a PPI) before/after the sleeve surgery. When the surgeon was doing the sleeve operation, he also repaired a hiatal hernia which means the upper portion of the stomach is moving up past the opening for the esophagus in the diaphragm.

RE: CPAP and Gastric Reflux
I've also been on PPIs (Proton Pump Inhibitors) for GERD (Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease), or actually EoE (Eosinophilic Esophagitis), or to be even more precise PPI-REE (Proton Pump Inhibitor-Responsive Esophageal Eosinophilia) Bug-eyed  for a good 10 years, which by and large have kept what used to be quite unpleasant symptoms in check, but which would occasionally resurface, Vomit eeew so to speak.

Gotta say, since being on CPAP since May, I have yet to experience one single episode of GERD unpleasantness. Correlation is not causation, but it is coincidental enough that I think I'll bring it up (figuratively Grin ) with my gastroenterologist at our next appointment at the end of the month. I'd maybe like to get the green light to get off medication I may no longer need, thereby avoiding short and long-term side effects, but I suspect if I do, the way he'll tell me to do it is by gradually tapering off. Cold turkey just intuitively seems like a bad approach. In any event, I do recommend you speak to your specialist (or 2 or 3 if need be) before making any rash decisions on your own about medication.

After the stomach surgery, I don't drink soda. Too sweet, acid content, and carbonation doesn't mix with little stomach I have. BTW pantoprazole is same med I have taken. Another name is Protonix, a PPI.

You would bring that up.

RE: CPAP and Gastric Reflux
In the early 90's I was diagnosed with a 'sleeping disorder' no apnea designation then. I had an operation to remove everything in the back of my throat and that mostly fixed me up. Today I also use an apap machine to finish the job.

As far as acid.... When I had apnea really bad, I'd wake up in the middle of the night and lean over with my mouth gaping and acid would drip from the rim of my mouth. It was almost like the monster in the Alien movies. I really don't have an acid problem, and rarely take an antacid today but the apnea caused burning coatings of acid in my mouth many nights. I've not met anyone that experienced the same issue like this.

Low carb diet can help gerd
https://goo.gl/MEdgJA

also if you raise the head of the bed 4-6" a house brick is about the right size. This will make a slope where the stomach is lower. not sleeping on your right side can help too.
mask fit http://www.apneaboard.com/wiki/index.php...ask_Primer
For auto-cpap, from machine data or software. You can set the min pressure 1 or 2cm below 95%. Or clinicians commonly use the maximum or 95% pressure for fixed pressure CPAP, this can also be used for min pressure.
