bloody nose after one week on cpap
I've been using my CPAP for about a week now. I just had my first bloody nose since I was a kid! It didn't last long and occurred several hours after I woke up.I have the humidifier on my CPAP set at 2. Maybe I need to increase the number?

Welcome to the forum!!! We are glad you joined us. Welcome

As to your question, I am not sure why you are experiencing bloody noses.

Hi Krissrockss,
WELCOME! to the forum.!
You might turn your humidity up a notch or two and see if that helps you.
Best of lukc.

This info might be of some help: http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health//dci/Dis...risks.html

Congestion, runny nose, sneezing, sinusitis, and nosebleeds can occur while using CPAP. A CPAP machine that uses a heated humidifier can help relieve these side effects. Also, make sure that your mask fits properly.

Some people find that using a saline nasal spray at bedtime prevents these side effects. If these steps don't work, talk to your sleep specialist.

My sleep doc recommended coating the inside of the nose with bacitration to help with dried out surfaces. Also, you could try a higher humidifier setting; I set mine high in the winter and lower it for the rest of the year.

1) Higher Humidifier Setting - are you using distilled water, if not at least filtered? There can be strange things in tap water.
2) Use a saline water nasal spray before bed - really use it.
3) Irrigate and clean out the sinuses with light saline water - there are attachments for water-pics to do this - as well as little tip pots. Check with your ENT on how to do this and also get from him a recipe to make your own saline instead of buying packets to mix in (expensive) but for gawd sake make sure you use Kosher salt not iodized salt.
4) this is going to sound funny - drink more water during the day so you are hydrated (good idea anyway).
5) Besides brushing before bed - rinse your mouth with a good non-alchoholic mouthwash.
Good Luck

A Neti Pot helps me when I get dried out nasal passages:

Hi Krissrockss, welcom to the forum!

Also try to make sure that you are not having any Large Leaks some time during the night. Large Leaks will cause the air flow to skyrocket and prevent the humidifier from being able to keep up with the demand for humidity. Maybe the machine's display will report how big your leaks are.

If SleepyHead supports your model, I recommend using it, so you can see everything about your treatment. If SleepyHead does not support your machine, maybe Encore Pro (or whatever Respironics calls it) supports your machine and can show time plots of leaks.

Take care,
--- Vaughn

Take all the advice above.
Also, visit your local drug store and ask for Ayr Nasal Gel. It will cost about $10, but you will use it super sparingly.
Each evening (about 30 mins before you retire) put a dab into each nostril and do the same upon waking.
This stuff contains aloe and is pretty darned good. Oxygen patients often use this and they have a real tendency to have dry nostrils.

As mentioned above.
Increase humidity, try 4. Only when you start to notice water drops in the hose then its to high.
Don't use tap water. The chlorine in the water will be bad.
Filtered water or bottled water preferable distilled water.

Good luck and have a good night sleep Smile
