CPAP cleaning system
RE: CPAP cleaning system
Without even talking about the SoClean at all.

Just because one person has not had a negative effect really does not have anything to do with what happens to another. You might get the same result and you might not. So saying that I have not had a negative effect for 100 years really does not tell anyone about what may happen to them. There are 7.6 BILLION people in the world and a "study" of ONE is not relevant. Sorry but no.

It does not matter that there are trillions of good bacteria in your system, it only take one or a few bad ones to make a problem and there are more than a few bad ones in our guts. Get some E-Coli on your hands, touch your mask and put it on your face and hope that it all goes well.

All that said, is the SoClean required NO not at all. The key here is "required" and not does it do anything or does it help or would it be better to have one. YES if you clean your equipment that is enough. Now if you are like many or at least some, then well you don't clean it all the time, or as much as you should or you are not doing it right well then you "may" have a problem.

If you carefully look at the SoClean web site you will find that it does exactly what the company says. There are some quotes from customers that claim lots of things, 2 of which claim to reduce colds. Well that is a sample size of two out of 7.6 BILLION people, this may or may not be right and "sounds" good, but really does not "mean" anything.

SoClean does not "clean" you CPAP, it kills any bacteria that the Ozone touches-this is not a bad thing. Oil on the mask is not effected by Ozone, so you need to wash it off, along with all the other bio matter that comes from humans. You also need to clean your CPAP equipment, or use some other way to keep it clean, or you can just take your chances and use a dirty CPAP system, you "may" be just fine-it's your call.

There is not doubt that many people can go their entire life without a SoClean and do just fine, many can also never clean their CPAP and also do just fine. It's up to you and nothing is for sure.

Those that say the SoClean does nothing are wrong.
Anyone that says the SoClean is required is wrong.
Each of us needs to decide if it works for us. How do you clean your CPAP and how often? How sensitive is your system to bacteria? Can you afford it and does it make you feel better about your health? What is the risk of breathing bacteria into you lungs (it's not all bad)?

No one can tell you this, you must decide what risk you are willing to take for the money you are willing to spend or what you are willing to do so you don't have to spend more money.

We do this all the time. Do you grow your own food? do you buy it and prepare your meals? do you get take out? do you go to restaurants for every meal? This is all the same. Do you wash your CPAP? do you replace your CPAP on the medicare schedule? do you us SoClean? Same-same.

This reflects a common layman's misunderstanding of microbiology, human flora, distribution and control of bacteria in the home environment, and routes and mechanisms of infection. It also ignores the fact that most of us have a very robust immune system. Most strains of E. coli, for example, are not pathogenic and just a few inhaled cells will not cause disease. For most bacteria, the number required is much larger than we are ever likely to encounter in a reasonably clean CPAP system and there are very few pathogenic bacteria that will grow to significant numbers. if at all, in humidifier water. E. coli and most gut flora will not. Those that will are very unlikely to be encountered in the home environment.  Unpleasant as the thought may be, regardless of our personal hygiene, it is impassible to avoid exposure to our gut flora by a number of routes including inhalation and ingestion.

As a  hospital microbiologist, I saw E. coli in samples from many parts of the body including the respiratory tract in cases in which it was not causing infection.

@PoolQ: I don't think anyone is saying that SoClean is required.

From what I read on this forum, some people just state they are using it and have no problems...

While some people think SoCLean does nothing...

So, it's same as with any other gadget, some love Apple, some love Android phones. There's no wrong answer when it comes to personal preferences.

SANI BOT CPAP CLEANER

Anybody familiar with this cleaning machine, that uses water rather than light or ozones?

RE: CPAP cleaning system
Sani Bot appears to be an ultrasonic cleaner. Similar cleaners can be purchased for under $100

The specifically engineered cleaning detergent contains no strong disinfectants. The listed ingredients are:
Sodium bicarbonate (Baking soda-no antimicrobial activity)
Potassiun caroate there is no such compound. They probably meant Potassium Carbonate (used to make soap) but have a problem with English- no antimicrobial activity
Sodium Perborate (found in many detergents, mild disinfecting properties)
PEG 6000 (no antimicrobial activity- PEG is used in many laxatives-) no antimicrobial activity
Lauylsulfate (probably sodium lauryl sulfate found in many detergents- disrupts the cell walls of some bacteria, again, a problem with English
Soduim benzoate (food preservative- prevents growth of microorganisms but doesn’t kill them

It’s probably a good cleaner like most household detergents.

They claim it provides PROFESSIONAL MEDICINAL SANITATION & DISINFECTION AT HOME but there are no professional grade sanitizing/disinfecting agents in the formulation.
Save your money and use dish washing detergent and wash manually with dish washing detergent. I’m a microbiologist with decades of experience with disinfection/sanitization and that’s what I use.

RE: CPAP cleaning system
CPAP equipment takes very little maintainance.  Put a allergy filter on your air intake and the system is blowing clean air. Calium build up in the humifier dissolves with vinegar, The tube is nearly sterile. The mask has the same bacteria you have in your mouth and respiratory trat - nit a source of infection. CLean the silicon in your mask regulary and it will last a year or two. Use CHapstick to make a better seal with mask and face - especially mask and beard - and run at lower pressures.

Ionic cleaners, scrub brushes, frequent replacements are by taste, not necessity, You are never free of bacteria, why try to get your equipment that way?

That post was made 10 years ago (08-07-2012, 04:22 PM). I'd be surprised if those links were still valid.
