Can you have sleep apnea during the day?

I believe that if you have untreated sleep apnea and are sleep deprived you are probably having many brief periods of micro sleep so you could be experiencing central apneas or brief hyponeas during those periods but once you start treatment those periods should become less and less and be virtually eliminated.

Thank you for your response. I have been treating my Obstructive sleep Apnea since July of 2016. It has been successful until January 2017. Really successful. 

Central sleep apnea is new and I am not sure why...

I would be interested to learn more as well. I have had episodes of being fully awake and not breathing. The most recent that I remember was a few months ago, and I was between BiPap and ASV devices. Yes the ASV indicates I have mixed apnea, a combo of Obstructive and the xPap brings out my Centrals.

The particularly clear time I stopped breathing while awake, I can't remember particular date or time, I was sitting on the sofa resting from some household task like I must do every day anyway. Lest I forget, I have COPD to keep Apnea company. So anyway, sitting on the sofa, and 10 - 30 seconds go by, and some brain cell wakes up and the "hey you have to start breathing again" message gets shouted from within. Then I start breathing again, but I can't say breath rate was faster. If I were to guess, I would say it wasn't, as breathing anywhere over moderately faster and deeper causes chest tightness and discomfort. I'm told the breath rate and chest tightness points to COPD, along with the pulmonary function test signifying its presence.

FWIW I did mention the daytime breathing pauses to both the primary care and specialist pulmonary doctors. Specialist Duck just blew it off as another way to tell me to get on CPAP and you're problems are over...While he and I agree xPAP of some sort was needed, we don't agree on much else.

Ending the post by saying since I've been on the ASV for the week so far, I can't recall any daytime breathing pauses, but that doesn't indicate they did or didn't happen. With the several medical issues on the plate, I very well could have failed to notice any of the recent pauses if they did happen.
