Coincidence or CPAP related?
#1
Question
Coincidence or CPAP related?
I first began my CPAP journey in 2010 and mostly used the Swift FX for Her nasal pillow mask with PR System One CPAP.  I love the nasal mask, but my mouth falls open, so I tape it shut with 3M Micropore tape.  I have some problems with adhesives, skin irritation, etc., so I only used my CPAP off and on for the past several years.

I recently revisited my CPAP, and purchased the Amara View FFM.  I also like this mask, but it seems to give me huge bags under my eyes.

Since I started using the Amara two weeks ago, I have developed increasing dizziness, throat irritation, and sinus congestion.  I first assumed it was a cold, but it doesn't seem to be getting worse OR better.  Now I wonder if it is some kind of reaction to the new mask?  Yes, I use the humidifier on my CPAP, set at 5.

I reverted back to the nasal pillow mask, thinking that would help, but so far it hasn't.

Has anyone experienced this?

How many nights have you been back on the nasal pillow mask?

Have you considered that this might be the result of too much humidity?  Try 1 for a few nights and see how it goes.  It seems more likely to me that this is a reaction to too much humidity or a sinus/ear infection rather that from the new mask itself (e.g. an allergic reaction to some component).

I've always had my humidifier set to 5 and haven't had this problem.  I do realize our bodies change, though, so maybe setting it lower for a few nights will help.

It's so frustrating to want to be compliant, but things keep working against it!

I had similar symptoms for the first part of this year (not xPap related), went from one specialist to another, including MRI to rule out stuff and was ultimately diagnosed with Migraine Equivalents. Which, I guess, is like a migraine but without the headache. So it has triggers and weird symptoms and can often include being mistaken for sinus infection or even an inner ear infection (I was crashing into the walls due to lack of equilibrium). If you have a history of migraines, you may want to see your doctor. The fix is easy. My sleep doctor is of the opinion that it may have come on (in my case) with lack of sleep.

The Amara mask could have pressed on a sinus, making it a little ornery. It might take a bit for the sinus to get convinced to relax again. 3 nights might not have been enough to get a recalcitrant sinus cooperating again.

This may be counter-intuitive, but have you thought about babying the sinuses for a couple of days? Warm compress, Simply Saline squirts, chicken soup.... Get back to square one with your face and then address CPAP adjustments.

Hang in there...

I had migraines with aura as a teen through my early 30s.  Now it seems I just get the aura and no headache.  I'll do some research on migraine equivalents.  Thanks!

Same here. In reading about this issue, it sounds like people with our type of migraine history are common. But I don't know much about it though. Best of luck!

Yeah, I've seen a number of people commenting on mask pressure on their nose causing sinus problems.

Related to Migraine Equivalents (if that is actually the underlying problem) - there are a ton of possible triggers, and perhaps the Amara mask is doing something that is a trigger. For me, a huge trigger is the weather. But it could be food, or all kinds of things. I wouldn't be surprised if pressure could be a trigger.

It is the combination of sinus infection-type problems plus dizziness that resonated with me in reading the original symptoms. If you'd included car sickness and weird spatial relationship/disorientation problems, I'd be asking if Skylark was my twin. Too-funny
