Concern over CSAs
All my readings are Central Sleep Apnoeas with the occasional HYP .i can only speak to my specialist at his consulting rooms on a Thursday which was today here in Australia . I forwarded my data to him by email upon advice from his receptionist.I haven't heard back . Am I to be concerned or as someone suggested these CSA s will peter out?

Hi Lorraine

What is the breakdown of your events? AHI, apnea index, hypopnea index?

Central apneas can be endemic or can come on once you start CPAP therapy. If the latter, they may go away with time, or judicious adjustments to you settings. If they don't go away you may need an ASV type machine, which is quite expensive. However that really depends on how many you're experiencing - if it's a low number then it might not be a worry.

Thanks deep breathing ,
I do not have Sleepyhead software just software compatible with BM C . The AHIs are all below 5 I understand that with centrals the brain doesn't send messages to the lungs . Well I have been told I have a Central Nervous System disorder by a neurologist which gives me fatigue.I am wondering if there is any correlation between the two.
I am due to go back to the specialist end of next month but am concerned that I may be doing irrerepairable damage to my health .

It's possible the central apnea is related to your central nervous system disorder. However if your total AHI is below 5 then your apnea is regarded as "treated" and the centrals aren't really a problem. I wouldn't worry too much.

RE: Concern over CSAs
I am extremely annoyed with my respiratory physician. I had our computer shop send him my data last week .Un fortunately they said the file was too big 300KB so they sent a link which his receptionist wasn't able to open At the end of last week I printed copies all of CSA s and 1 hypopnea. I rang today to speak to him and the receptionist said he had a patient and he would ring me at home .Well I waited until 5.30 and never heard so I rang again and was told he had left the building and she would text him .Well I still have not heard and it is bedtime.I can only speak to him on Thursdays as they are his consulting days.
I find this level of service terribly wanting . My concern was my CSA s and Hypopneas have gone over 5 and there are no OSAs
Am I being reasonable expecting an answer

Unfortunately it's par for the course that the doctor's time is far more valuable than yours. You're only the patient, after all. Maybe if we started calling ourselves "customers" they might pay more attention. There are some really good doctors around, but a lot of duds as well - sounds like you got a dud.

On the other hand, I don't understand about sending the data from your computer shop. It should be just a matter of attaching the file to an email - it's quite easy, just get somebody to show you how if you haven't done it before. But the part about 300kb being too big to send is just silly. A lot of ISPs (internet service provider) put a limit on attachment sizes, but it's in the megabytes, not kilobytes.

By the way, I've just been doing a StreetView drive around Maleny - looks like a gorgeous part of the world! It's not that far out of Brisbane - maybe you should shop around in the big smoke for a more attentive doctor.

Hi Deepbreathing,
Yes Maleny is a lovely little village . The only downside are the tourists who come in and take our parking spaces.lol. There are 26 eating places here with a wide variety of food.
Unfortunately there aren't ports left available for us so we have to use our dongal which is horrendously expensive. $55.00 for 8GB and $10.00 every GB thereafter. Hence we only use my iPad as the laptop chews up too much data. That is why I cannot send my results to the specialist and have to use the computer store.
I shall ring the receptionist and tell her what I think of the specialist.

Hi Lojos71,

Having an AHI between 5 and 15 per hour of sleep is often considered "Mild" sleep apnea, so please do not be overlyworried. All the same, it is likely that we can help you lower your AHI and achieve better sleep.

How long have you been using your machine, and how many hours every night, on average?

It is not uncommon (happens about 33% of the time, I think) that when we initially start CPAP therapy we may have lots of central apneas. I think in about half of these cases (about 16%), over the course of the initial weeks or few months the number of CA tends to reduce to less than 5 per hr, which is usually considered too low to warrant a special Adaptive Servo Ventilator (ASV) type of CPAP machine which is able to treat both central sleep apnea as well as obstructive sleep apnea.

Take care,
--- Vaughn
