Cpap causing burping and maybe gas after weight loss

Cpap causing burping and maybe gas after weight loss
I have recently lost slightly over 20% of my body weight. My CPAP is causing me to burp while I am using it and in the morning when I wake up. I am still planning on losing another 10 to 20% and would like to avoid a sleep study at this time. Any suggestions on how to deal with this?

Burping is probably caused by swallowing air. This may be alleviated by turning on EPR, but I don't believe the S8 has that option. Swallow only on exhale, and be conscious of not swallowing air, and see if you can improve it.

Good luck!

Tongue Suck Technique for prevention of mouth breathing:
  • Place your tongue behind your front teeth on the roof of your mouth
  • let your tongue fill the space between the upper molars
  • gently suck to form a light vacuum

Practising during the day can help you to keep it at night

r_mermel,
First, congrats on your weight loss!
As Daria said, you are probably swallowing air (aerophagia).
You can try to elevate the head of your bed so that you not laying flat. Also, try not to eat before bed. I'm sure others that experiience this problem will follow with suggestions.

Good job on the weight loss!

Be aware that as you do lose significant weight it can have a rather profound effect on your cpap requirements. Usually a positive effect although if a pressure of 14 (for example) is what you have needed in the past, that might be too high for you now.

I think it's time you rewarded yourself and your insurance company with a new auto-titrating machine. Just ask Mr. Doctor if he would kindly prescribe you a S9 or A10 Autoset machine so it can adjust to the brand new you. You really shouldn't have to have a new study in your case.

Hi r_mermel,
WELCOME! to the forum.!
CONGRATULATIONS! on your weight loss.
If you can get a newer machine, you would be better served by the newer technology.
Hang in there for more answers to your questions and much success as you continue and finetune your CPAP therapy.

Welcome, r!

Let it all out when you wake up. You get extra points if you can set off car alarms. Cool

Lots of folks have had to deal with this "aerophagia." You might find some hints if search on that.

There's a youtube video with one proposed solution to this in the useful links in my signature line below. It involves tilting your head forward to where your chin is closer to your chest. Looks like it might make your neck hurt, but it helps some people.
Get the free OSCAR CPAP software here.
Useful links.
Click here for information on the main alternative to CPAP.
If it's midnight and a DME tells you it's dark outside, go and check it yourself.

'thanks for the advise. My EPR is already set for the highest setting.

I called my DME and asked them about getting a newer unit that has auto-titration. They are concerned that my insurance company will not splurge for a new unit even if my doc requests it, and that is with my unit being 5 years old. They have also added a sleep doc to their staff and recommended that I see him, not happy about that.

Oh, the S8 has EPR. I loved my S8.

you shouldn't have too much trouble getting a new machine if yours is 5 years or older....note I said shouldn't. I wouldn't see a doc that is associated with the DME (my personal opinion). Talk with your doc and see what he/she says and let them contact your insurance if you have insurance and get the auth. If you don't have insurance, then you can get a new machine that you want if your doc will write the script. Make sure that the doc is specific about the machine you want and write on the script dispense as written.

a big congrats on your weight loss

I agree with me50, these machine life expectancy is 5 year, so the Insurance company shouldn't have a problem with that, and this is your therapy so have that doctor write a script for the machine you want!, why settle for less.( I know not all insurance co. are the same try your best.)

Good Luck!
