Dallas-Fort Worth Doctor Recommendations, please
#1
Question
Dallas-Fort Worth Doctor Recommendations, please
I hope it’s permissible to ask this question…

My sleep apnea is pretty severe (AHI 65 and VPAP pressures 17-22), so I need a doctor with specific expertise in sleep disorders, compared with Primary Care Physicians dibbling in such.  (I know of a dentist who has OSA patients, LOL).

My previous doctor was a dedicated sleep specialist (only)… She was so highly regarded that she interpreted the majority of all sleep studies in N. Texas.  She remotely adjusted my ResMed machine settings as needed.  However, she closed her practice last year and moved to a teaching position out of state.

I have tried to get referrals in reverse, by calling sleep study clinics to ask for names of doctors most frequently requesting sleep studies (indicating more interest/expertise).  But they will not offer any help.

So….. I’m left to ask here for recommendations of Sleep Disorder specialists.  I live just north of the DFW airport, but will drive anywhere within reason to see a medical specialist, or a doctor with more than a passing interest in OSA.

Any recommendations are appreciated here or in Private Messages, please.

Dr. Jack Gardner, Medical Sleep Solutions in Desoto.  +1 (972) 709-7190
He was D Magazine’s Sleep Doctor of the year for many years.  I have used him since 2020 and found his staff very responsive.

fsommerville, thanks so much for this referral.

I had my first appointment with Medical Sleep Solutions Nov.2.  I saw Dr. Ed Charnock, one of Dr. Gardner's partners.

As noted in my first post, I have severe apnea, and my previous doctor had my VPAP machine set to 17 EPAP (range 17-22 cmH20).  This setting made leak control a constant problem, as leaks at 22 cmH20 would invariably wake me up to reset the machine (remove hose at mask to let it auto turn-off, then reinsert the hose to restart machine).

Dr. Charnock thought these setting were too high, even for my troublesome AHI control needs.  So he adjusted the EPAP to 14.2, which I thought was counter-intuitive.

And WOW, what a difference!  In the three weeks since, "My Air" shows the leaks are almost gone, and my events have not increased, but instead are stable at less than 3 per hour.  Just as important, without the leaks, I am waking up less than half as often as before, offering more chances to maintain deep sleep.

I am SO pleased at your suggestion to try Medical Sleep Solutions.  These folks have been in business since 1989, and they are truly excellent.  I will recommend them to anyone in the DFW area without hesitation.
