CPAP ownership question

CPAP ownership question
I have a quick question. I just got off the phone with Lincare, which took over an hour. I had been laying on my CPAP for over a year and finally found out that it was paid off and is now mine. However, a Lincare nurse is still controlling the setting for the air setting on it. I asked that if it was my CPAP why do they still control that setting. I was told that to change that setting I had to have a prescription from my sleep doctor and they would have to authorize it. Is this true or is it a load of BS?

RE: CPAP ownership question
Rick,

You will find that most people on this forum have come here to optimize CPAP therapy by adjusting pressure on their own, disregarding a prescription. Lincare requires a prescription to adjust the settings for you, but if you want to adjust the pressure yourself it is not illegal rather encouraged here so long as the changes you make are for enhancing therapeutic value.

RE: CPAP ownership question
If your are aware of settings that work better for you, it is not a bad idea to discuss them with your doctor and adjust your prescription to "patient control", even if parameters for minimum and maximum are included. That gets the DME off your back. The bottom line is, that you can continue to receive supplies, even if you exercise your RIGHT to decline monitoring and respiratory therapist interventions. You have an Airsense 10 Autoset, and can withdraw your permission to use AirView and MyAir online transmission of your data. http://www.apneaboard.com/forums/Thread-...#pid248673

If you mean controlling it remotely, you can disable remote access by switching "Airplane Mode" on.  See the user's guide (if you don't have one, you can get a PDF of it from the Resmed web site).  If you want a more permanent fix, you can remove the cellular modem; instructions are at:

Semi-permanently disabling modem in ResMed Airsense 10 by Sleep87, 2015-03-17

Or if you just mean that the setting was set long ago and hasn't been changed since, then request a clinician's manual for the machine by following the "CPAP Setup Manuals" link at the top of this page.  The magic gesture to get into the clinical menus is to press the knob and the Home key at the same time and hold them down for a few seconds.  That gives you access to the settings that some DME employees think are some kind of Masonic secret.

It is true for them, but it is not true for you. In other words, as medical professionals they cannot change it without the proper authorization, but you do not need that authorization.

It's a really bad idea to change it, though, unless you know what you're doing.

Post some charts, so we can see what you're going through with your AHI's and current settings.  Then maybe there'll be a better idea about how to help you get started.  (Just FYI... most newbies don't have a clue what they're doing until they download SleepyHead, learn to post charts, learn to read them and then ask for help... and not necessarily in that order).

Your machine, your body... Tell the DME you'll get a new prescription with 'patient control' and to stop changing your settings.
