Haven't tried it yet. I would be concerned that the scent stays with the machine and gets into the parts, etc. After you get tired of the scent, it may take a while to clear from inside the machine components, gaskets, washers, etc. I remember someone suggesting placing the essential oil near the air intake outside the machine although that would probably still result in the same.

just how Nasty & Vile tasting it is

I remembered on a road trip through Arizona, 3 decades ago, that the water coming out of the shower at a motel had the faint smell of petrol/diesel. Think there were some oil wells in and around the area, so I figured the municipal water must have had some contamination. Brushing teeth that day wasn't a pleasant experience either  Dodgy.  If it's still that way today, I definitely wouldn't use it for my humidifier.

Otherwise, if it meets WHO standards for drinking water quality, should be ok. Shy

Oils of any kind are nutrients for bacteria. Sort of defeats the idea of using distilled water, the idea of which is to provide water that is free of nutrients that support bacterial growth.

I wipe my mask with a lemon scented "wet one" each day and that provides a pleasant (to me) scent that seems to help a bit. I wouldn't put anything in the water in my humidifier personally.

Costco in Canada sells 18 litre jugs of demineralized water treated with reverse osmosis for just over $3 Canadian which is similar in Australian dollars.

I was reading somewhere that you can use demineralized water and boil it, cool it down and use it in our humidifiers. It certainly would be much cheaper than to buy supermarket distilled water which costs now just under $2 for 3.785 litres or 1 US gallon. In the US, the price of distilled water has risen too. I recall several years ago at Winco it could be bought for around $.64 which was much cheaper than Target or Walmart. Now, it's close to $1

This is a really old thread. You can use tap water, many do. A vinegar soak and rinse will remove any mineral residue. If you can drink the water, you can use it.

Demineralized water is effective for preventing deposits in the humidifier chamber and is approximately equal to distilled in effectiveness. As Gideon said, tap water is fine, however where I have very high solids like the well water at our cottage, I use a Zero Water pitcher to remove suspended solids. It is about the same as the RO water.

No need to boil it. I have a sediment filter followed by a water softener followed by a RO filter.

If the water is OK to drink, it's OK for the humidifier.

RE: Distilled water vs demineralised water
Its been about 4 years since I asked this. So, I thought I will update.

I have only used tap water in Australia (Darwin and Canberra) with my humidifier. I see a lot more mineral deposit now from Canberra's tap water though - may be because it runs dry more often given its very cold in Canberra (compared to Darwin), despite me using a full tank and 7 hours of use. I wash it once a month/sometimes once in 2 months - First soak it with one part vinegar and three parts water (sometimes 50/50) for about 10 minutes and then wash it mild dish soap (a drop of soap in to the humidifier and fill it up with tap water) use a very gentle (baby milk bottle cleaning brush) brush and rinse it off. I haven't had any dramas with this approach.
