Do I need to use water at all?

I don't use the humidifier at all (set to zero). Do I even need to put water in the machine? It's gone dry a couple of times within a week (desert air) and I haven't had problems. I just don't want to harm the machine.

You don't need to add any water. The water is just there for the patient's comfort. The machine is not dependent on it.

I just removed the humidifier for the summer. I know the Phillips and Resmed machines separate easily into two pieces if you aren't using the humidifier. Don't know about other brands. This makes it lighter and more compact for travel too. I may put it back on for the winter since I have electric heating and the humidity drops much lower. I used the machine a lot on the boat this summer where it is plenty humid without humidification and removing it saves power when running off the batteries. I think my unit (Phillips) can also turn off the humidifier in the settings.

What machine are you using? might be a good idea to complete profile with machine, mask, CPAP prssure, etc ...
Some machines, you can detach the humidifier and connect the hose directly to the machine, easy-peasy
AirSense 10 with integrated humidifier, you can set humidity off, with without water in the tank or with water in the tank so you get some moisture but no heat (passover mode). Also, you can get $20 side cover replaces the water tank and that solve the problem for you permanently without fussing about with humidity controls

You don’t have to use humidity if you don’t want to, it’s a comfort feature.

Good to know zonk! I didn't know that, but it will be useful to know this in the summer to try without any humidification.

I set the humidifier at "5" when I am in Palm Springs, CA. At home in Newport Beach, CA, I set the humidifier at "1".

When in Palm Springs, the humidifier adds so much moisture to the air that it almost runs dry overnight. I figure the added moisture must be a good thing. Chuck

There are folks like me who never use the machine without a heated hose humidifier.
There are others who don't even own a humidifier.
As you have seen there are some in between.
It is a comfort issue.
