Do you ever skip a night with the machine?
I have been hauling the lovely cpap around for the months I have been using it, and do intend to keep on doing that, but sometimes I wonder if I can just skip a night if I want to sleep out under the stars or whatever. Thoughts?

Never been without my APAP! Going on 11 months now. 100% Compliance.
I have a feeling that if I went without for a night, I would feel like total crap the next day. When you say you have been hauling it around....do you travel a lot? You could always invest in a battery.

Try it and then answer your own question.
I have made adjustments to my life and spent money to ensure that I don't have to go a night without it.
if you can't decide then you don't have enough data.

Hi kally,
No, I haven't gone a night without my machine every since I started in 2008. You can camp with a CPAP machine, there are plenty of threads here on the board about that. Good luck and happy sleeping out under the stars.

Last time I did was when I still packed it in my checked luggage (one less thing to carry). Got separated from my bags and had a horrible night without it. It now does not leave my sight when traveling.

RE: Do you ever skip a night with the machine?
I often go without my APAP for many nights. Fortunately my apnea responds favorably when I sleep on my side exclusively. I keep tabs on my condition via O2 monitoring as well as sleep sounds recording. I apparently sleep better without the machine, providing I stay on my side. I dream more when not using the mask so I'm assuming that's related to getting deeper into the sleep stage. That is for most of the time. There are times when my nose is completely stuffed up that require me to have the machine on or else not be able to fall asleep. I have discovered some things that alleviate the nasal problem and currently have hopes of not needing the APAP machine at all someday soon. So far so good. YMMV

For me this is a scary thought and not an option. Any sleep is far better than none.

RE: Do you ever skip a night with the machine?
I've only been using my machine since early March of this year so my experience might not be indicative of what other, long term users experience. I've taken my machine on four trips and have left it home for three. To tell you truth, I felt just fine on those short (less than four night) trips that I opted to not take the machine with me. My next scheduled trip is in November for 7 nights so I'll most likely take it with me then.
I was diagnosed via home sleep study with only moderate OSA...AHI of 20.6 (23 in the supine position) and I've been averaging an AHI of about 1.5 over the past 6 months (per Sleepyhead) |
