DreamStation Filter Contamination
#1
DreamStation Filter Contamination
Hi,

Yesterday, I was surprised to find that both the pollen and ultra-fine filters in my machine were clogged with black (Carbon?) particles. I also noted that water chamber was completely dry. There were odd odors noted, and the water chamber was undamaged.

I had just cleaned the pollen filter and replaced the ultra-fine filter mid-June.

Has anyone experienced this?

I did the obvious checks around the machine. There was only a small amount of dust on the furniture, and the machine and tubing is clean. I do not burn candles nearby, and the furnace is off. I do have the window slightly opened, as is the case nearly year-round.

I replaced both filters and will continue to monitor their condition.

Is it possible the contamination is from the blower?

Does anyone have any further suggestions or recommendations?

If it were myself, I’d replace filter and pre-filter then monitor the situation, just like you’re doing already. I personally doubt the issue is from the machine motor, but it cannot be ruled out either. I can’t think of anything else to consider that you’ve not mentioned.

I seriously doubt that it is from your blower as air is drawn into the machine through this filters, not the other way around.

More likely that some sort of local air shed contamination being drawn into the machine when in use from an open window or something. Clean the washable, and replace the fine particulate filter and check again more frequently to keep them clean. Those little filters protect your lungs and the machine.

Is it very dry where you are right now? I take it that you were surprised that your water tank dried up.

"black (carbon?) fibers". remove the candles from the room and see what the filter looks like after a few weeks. also, keep water in the tank even if humidifier is off to keep burnt-like odor down.

I have a IQAir Cleanroom H13 in my room, the filters still turn black. I suspect that theres an active agent in the filter itself that turns black after a period of time, or after a certain amount of filtration. Or it might be dead skin that you shed, da da da dum.

RE: DreamStation Filter Contamination
I have used the DreamStation for 2.5 years, in many different locations. Each location results in different speeds at which the filters get dirty (turn dark gray). At some places (a non-smoking room at a casino), it's after just one night! Yikes!

In general (ie: in my home), I change the filter every couple of weeks because it either smells and/or is gray.

I've never seen stuff on the large filter, only the micro filter. So I'm surprised you'd find black pieces. I find that peculiar.

The location's humidity also affects how quickly my DreamStation's humidifier goes through water. In a humid state, the water lasted all week. In an arid state, the water disappears within 8 hours of sleep.
