Just to close the loop on this thread, I was able to load Encore Basic (free download via this board) and purchased an infineer SmartCard reader off Ebay ($30, with shipping). That combination seemed to work just fine. I had some issues in understanding how the software worked, notably that is I wanted trend data it all had to be downloaded off the card at once rather that daily. Couple of things:
Encore defaults to erasing the card data after each download. If you want trend data you have to de-select the check box for that has encore erase the card after downloading If you don't want the annoying "card does not belong to an Encore patient" warning after each download you have to check the box for "return card to same patient" before downloading CB

It seems to do the calculation as it downloads and not off the data it has already downloaded. So you cna do a weekly data dump and then get the trend values from that download
