Enhanced driver's license.

Enhanced driver's license.
I went in to my local DMV office today to get my driver's license renewed. It expires in late October. I hate DMV offices, so I've been dreading having to do this. I decided that it was time to just do it and get it over with.

I was sure that I had all the documentation to acquire the new enhanced license. I had a regular copy of my birth certificate, my military DD-214 (proof of honorable service) and my original SS card, as well as other documents proving my place of residence and such.

Come to find out, a regular copy of your birth certificate isn't good enough. It has to be the original or a certified copy of it. My DD-214 was good enough to have VETERAN stamped on my license.

I was told that by your birth date of 2020, everyone must have the new enhanced driver's license. The new license will allow you to fly commercial and enter into or onto Fed. property. Without it, you cannot do the previous.

So......I ended up just getting a renewal of just my reg. license. It will be good until late Oct. of 2020.

My wife's license will expire on March 12, 2020. I will at that time or before, go in with her and while she gets her new license, I will re-apply for one as well. She has her original birth certificate. I'm going to have to order mine online.

I did so at a cost of $40.00. Supposedly, it will be approved and e-mailed to me for my review to make sure all info. is correct. Once I have done that and signed off on it, the cert. copy will be sent to me within a week or two.

Funny thing! I don't recall needing a birth certificate to join the military and serve my country.  Dont-know

Funny we’re not laughing about these requirements. Thanks for posting. My assumption is that the birth certificate or acceptable copy needs “raised” state seal.

I served as a PA Army National Guard, but since no active service was included I’m not a vet. I was in as a communication specialist, but was honorably medically discharged before basic training.

You will also need a copy of your marriage license to verify your wife's change of name unless she kept her maiden name.

My wife's maiden name was the exact same as mine. She told me one time that the only reason she married me, was so that she wouldn't have to change her last name on her driver's license.  Rolleyes

Supposedly, this new enhanced license can take the place of a passport. Supposedly! I did some research, and found plenty of online stories from people who said they had an enhanced driver's license and it still wouldn't allow them to enter foreign countries. Most still had to resort to a passport......if they happened to have one.

I have a passport, but mine is dated from the mid 1970's.

If you have a passport you don't need the enhanced driver's license to board a plane but the enhanced license will not serve as a passport.

There is a form of it that will for travel between US and neighboring countries such as Canada.

So what wise a** started this thread on the day I was supposed to go to Canada for a family reunion, only to discover that may Passport expired July 8.  So I went to my Secretary of States office to get the "Enhanced" license that would allow US/Canada border crossings only to find out I can't use my Passport because it expired last month.  Not even to prove I was born.

Supposedly, it can, but maybe only under certain circumstances? I don't know for sure. What I do know for sure, is all I wanted was a renewed driver's license.

The way it was explained to me, was that everyone would be required to have one in the year 2020. There wasn't an opt out option.

I have a paper temporary license that will serve me until my permanent license arrives in the mail. It will be very interesting to see what the expiration date on it will say.

As I've stated in the past. If I NEVER have to fly again in my life, it will still be too soon.  Annoyed-and-disappointed

This is a perfect example of how our government functions, at the local, state, and national level.

Seems like each state has it's own process or version of how it issues new licenses.  Oh-jeez

RE: Enhanced driver's license.
I got my enhanced license last year when I turned 65. Brought my passport and proof of my address and that was all I needed. My license was already a Veteran's license as I did that when I had to get a new picture a couple of years ago. I had a 1000 appt and I got there a little early. At 1000 I was at Office Depot having completed everything before my appt time. I was in and out in about 10 minutes. And this was an AZ DMV office.

When I travel stateside I still use my passport as ID. I figured I paid for that sucker, might as well use it. On a side note, an expired passport is good for getting a new one.
