[Equipment] Sleep lab can't read data from Dreamstation SD card

Sleep lab can't read data from Dreamstation SD card
I've never encountered anything like this before.

On January 14 I obtained a Dreamstation BiPAP Auto, swapping the Dreamstation APAP auto that I had received from my provider (Kaiser Permanente) March 18, 2018. Kaiser allows swaps like this within one year, so all I had to pay was the difference in the co-pay.

My sleep with the Dreamstation BiPAP is better, but there is an ongoing problem with the data card. On February 21 I had an appointment with the sleep specialist, so I carefully brought the data card so he could see the results. Before the appointment I put the data card in my laptop and viewed the data with SleepyHead 1.10, and SleepyHead had no problem importing the data.

When I got to the appointment, 15 minutes early, I gave the card to the staff so they could prepare reports for the specialist. They took the card and disappeared for a bit, and then came back and said that there was no data on the card. I know they are not very computer savvy, so I assumed they had failed to mount the card properly, or something. I asked them to try again, and they did, and then announced that they had data from before January 14 (the data from the APAP), but nothing after that. There ensued a conversation about the problem. Of course, while the sleep specialist I was about to see knew about SleepyHead, his secretarial staff were clueless, and thus ignored my protestations that SleepyHead had read the data from the card less than an hour earlier.

During the ensuing meeting with the specialist we discussed the matter briefly, and he suggested that I send him paper reports from SleepyHead, and he gave me a new data card. When I got home I prepared the reports, placed the card in the Dreamstation, but waited until the next day to send it so I could verify with SleepyHead that it had another night's data on it. After seeing that it was OK I sent it with the reports.

Today I got an e-mail from the specialist saying that he had read the reports, that they looked good, but adding that there was no data on the card. I do not know if he personally tried to look at the data, or relied on his secretarial staff, but I am totally perplexed.

I could use some suggestions!

Are you locking the card before reading it into sleepyhead?

As as side note I recently had a PR machine stop writing data to the card (even a new card). It was not readable by sleepyhead either. This precipitated a machine replacement. That said, if your machine is writing data to the card and you are not accidentally wiping the info by forgetting to lock the card prior to reading with sleephead you might try "hovering" while they read the card so see if you can figure out where the process goes sideways.

I'm pretty sure you know the usual format for a Philips machine on a SD card. The data is in a p-series folder, and it is either there or not. If Sleepyhead can read it, Encore can read it. It's impossible to say why Kaiser could not import data from your SD card into their system. Locking the card should make no difference for a Dreamstation as only the Resmed S9 was affected by system files.

Thanks for the replies.

I am wondering if there is a problem with Encore. Note that the first time I took them the card they said that they got the data from before January 14, but nothing afterwards. That tells me that Encore could read the data from the Dreamstation APAP, but not from the BiPAP. Maybe there is a switch in Encore to tell it that the data is from a BiPAP? I admit this is a long shot, but it's all I can come up with. I don't have Encore, so I have no way to check.

When that happened at my doc's office, he said to bring in the machine next time, with the card still in it. Not sure if that would help in your situation.

I agree that bringing in the the entire machine with data card might be worth a try. I've had to do it with a S9 VPAP Auto. Compliance data is what they were looking for.

JJJ, do you have EncoreBasic? If you can produce summary reports that's proof that there's reliable data on the card. You may want to take the machine to a different DME and see if they can pull the data. Maybe they put in a new card and download the compliance data stored in the machine.

Yeah, that is exactly what they told me. I told them that I couldn't bring in the machine. Of course I can bring it in, but that should not be necessary. I imagine that if I did they would still be unable to read the data from the card, so then they would use the modem to get the data from the machine, and then announce to me "see, we told you that you needed to bring in the machine." What I want is for them to learn how to get the data from the card without needing the machine. I should not have to schlepp the machine to them just because they can't figure out their software.

No, I don't have EncoreBasic. I have only Linux computers. But taking the card to a different DME is not a bad idea. Except that it is Kaiser, so they wouldn't accept anything that wasn't from Kaiser. I'm considering taking the card to a different Kaiser sleep office to see what happens (there are two others in the area). But before I go to that trouble I'd like to find out more about Encore, that is, without having to install Windows.

Could it be that the card has data on from both machines on it confusing encore ? Maybe format the sd card or use a new one for the new machine ?

RE: Sleep lab can't read data from Dreamstation SD card
I have never had problems with Encore reading data from multiple machines as each one is stored in a separate P-series folder by serial number. I do know Philips changed the data format in the hexadecimal data stored on the SD card sometime in 2017 or 2018 and that during the development of Sleepyhead 1.1, a new loader had to be developed for the newest generation of Dreamstations. As you may know, EncoreBasic does not play well with the Dreamstation series, and you usually have to upgrade to EncorePro 2.2 if you can run it. All of this to say, perhaps the good doctor's software is outdated.
