[Equipment] Speaking of filters

Speaking of filters
I will be visiting my permanent home in Texas next month. Two dogs reside there (along with other family members Wink ). One, Bella the princess, sheds a lot of fur/hair that seems to penetrate everything! Even though the house is cleaned and vacuumed often, I always have to decontaminate everything upon leaving. Both dogs are banned from my bedroom but I am sure my machine will be exposed.

Has anyone ever used a pre-filter over the intake inlet to prevent your machine from engorging dog hair? !!! I was thinking of something not too dense that might be taped in place temporarily.

Ideas for this crazy problem?

Thanks, Jeff

RE: Speaking of filters
While I've never considered doing such a thing, I would think that a small piece of a furnace filter would work for this purpose. Even though we have three cats, I've never found any cat hair in the machine's primary filter, so I'm not sure that a pre-filter is really needed.

RE: Speaking of filters
I have a similar CPAP machine and there are two different filters you can get. The filter that comes with the machine is just a dust filter nothing more. Needless to say it is a crappy filter. The other filter you can buy is the hypoallergenic filter that has a much finer weave and is basically a hepa filter. This is the one I use and it works really well. Get some and try it for yourself.

RE: Speaking of filters
I have never seen any cat/dog hair in my main foam filter either.

I do recommend the fine filter, which is placed underneath, and after the pre-filter. The fine filter is generally not cleaned, and is disposed of once used.

ps. the pre-filter discussed sounds like it may catch your heavily saturated dog hair application. If I had this situation, I think I would try to rubber-band a coarse low resistance air filter material over the inlet. search for "hogs hair natural fiber filter" or "hogs hair replacement" or "coarse polyester filter".

Hi QAL,
I use the same white filters, and change then the first of every month.
Mine look like your 1 month photo, and I don't own pets.

This happens at my house too, especially during Spring and Fall months when we have the windows open in our bedroom. Since we live in the country there is sometimes a lot of dust etc. floating around. When we had a dog, I usually had to change the filter on my cpap more often.

Hi GB,
I was surprised when I first pulled out the white filter and it looked gray! Ugh!

RE: Speaking of filters
If it's dog hair that's the issue (and not the dander) then I'd get some aluminum window screen and form a little cage to go in front of the air intake. The trick with filters is you want MUCH larger flow rate on your filters to lower flow resistance.

Wow. Such overkill (in my opinion). Put the CPAP up off the floor. Done.

If the dog is not allowed in the room, the only fuzz coming in is what you bring in on your clothing. There's not going to be that much, if any, sucked into your filter. It's not a window fan, it's a wee little blower sitting by the bed.

I have dogs, cats, and an old house with high ceilings. We run window fans vs AC. I live in a rural area. My critters are everywhere, including my bed. I've looked inside my old S9 Escape (as in I took it apart a while back) and there were no critter fuzz inside the machine. I've found some on the filters, sure, but not that many.

You probably breathe in more dog dander and fur through your mouth and nose just living in the house than your CPAP ever will.

RE: Speaking of filters
Thank you for the great replies. I will purchase some of the HEPA filter and use the standard filter as a pre-filter. Princess Bella shakes and hair flies everywhere. You can really see it when she stands in front of a sunlit window. I'm not particularly bothered by the air myself, I just don't want it inside the working parts of the machine.

Thanks, Jeff
