[Equipment] Water leak risk from ResMed AirSense 10 Humidifier tank
#11
RE: Water leak risk from ResMed AirSense 10 Humidifier tank
Well, now these threads have me paranoid enough to have put an ugly, long styrofoam tray under my Airsense 10 - the thing chicken parts come in at the supermarket, washed and kept "just in case" I ever needed something like it.  It's just the right size and I think I may need it until I have more information.

It'd be nice to have a rough idea if it's really a prevalent problem or if we just hear from those who have a rare leak.  In any case, the recovering engineer in me says that a part like this should have been designed to not leak at all - it's not that hard a problem to solve for manufacturing engineers.  I'm still trying to figure out why it has a metal bottom to begin with; if the lower part had to be molded in two pieces, why not all sonic-welded plastic?  That would absolutely never leak if made properly.

I like my 3-week-old Airsense 10 a lot but would be mighty peed-off if it decided to have a whee all over the bedside table one night, so the ugly foam tray stays for now.  If leaks are statistically significant, Resmed needs to address the problem and fix it.

The risk is low but it will eventually happen. It's only a 1/2 cup of water. I have a very short sided tray (I think it's called a jewellery tray) that I set my machine in. It has low sides - enough to contain water, but not block air circulation.

If you can't find anything plastic, then get a small wood tray from a hobby store and paint it with something that will resist water.

My brother's Respironics unit has leaked a couple of times and both times were after being used at a nursing home. Where the Resmed ones will leak is where the plastic meets the heating plate. I'm still using the original that came with my machine (3 years).

Ahh, the water is heated in the water tray - that explains the metal bottom plate.  Good to hear that at least some of them go a long time without issue; that probably means a good design with possible manufacturing defects here and there leading to failure and leaks.

Thanks. I'll leave the foam tray in place for now; it's long enough to slide out the water tray for refill without disturbing the machine itself.

The only time I have had a leak from mine was when i over filled it (and i mean a line width above full) and found that unless its on a dead level surface, water spills out the hinged side of the tray and onto whatever its sitting on, runs along the base and wicks its way between the metal and the plastic moulding. There the water stays for a bit until you put it in the machine when it proceeds to magically re-appear and look like a leak. GRRRRR

done it twice now, so i fill it an 1/8" below the full line, and no more leaks. Being rough and shaking things makes it worse, especially if the lid gasket isn't fitted correctly.

If one isn't careful when opening the humidifier tub after use, it can drip from condensation collected on the lid. My table happens to be plastic, so when it does drip upon opening that lid, it's rather easy to wipe up. Regardless, in normal use, my humidifier hasn't leaked once.

I have used my Resmed Airsense Elite for over a year and it has not leaked at all. I overfilled it slightly twice but it made such a racket I had to take the humidifier out to reduce to below the max level after which it purred like a cat.

So no leaks.
