Yes - what is being checked is the accuracy of the pressure regulation. When mine was given its 12 month check the method was to put it into fixed mode and checked at a low pressure - then at a high pressure. That procedure checks the calibration and tracking of the pressure sensor and ensures the machine is capable of working over the whole range.

and...

No - Since the machine regulates its pressure by sensing the Apneas and adjusting the pressure to make them stop (speaking simplistically). The accuracy of the pressure sensor in absolute terms is relatively unimportant in the provision of effective treatment.

Actually, the numbers are used to set the prescription range - but the sensor would have to be waaay out of whack to stop the automatics still doing the job albeit with misleading numbers.

Accuracy is good.

However, if you have a fully data capable machine, you monitor the results, and adjust the machine to give you good numbers and results, do you really care whether you're getting 14 cmH2O or 13 cmH2O?

Yes, you care if it's way off, or if the pressure delivered varies a lot.

This is also another advantage of judicious use of an auto machine. Set the pressure range to include a little above and below what you think the patient needs, and the machine will sort of "calibrate" itself to the right pressure even if the numbers on the display are slightly off.

If it's midnight and a DME tells you it's dark outside, go and check it yourself.
