First sleep study tomorrow night, nervous!

First sleep study tomorrow night, nervous!
So tomorrow is my first sleep study.  Dr wanted to do an in lab, split night study as he felt fairly certain my diagnosis would be swift.  After worrying about the study for several days now I am almost at peace worth it.  Any medical test or surgery gets me on edge almost to an obesssive level.  Today I was ready about the PSG and read about the esophageal manometry test sometimes done in conjunction with the PSG.  How common is that?  I don't really want to sleep with a nasal catheter, but I also want to do everything I can for an accurate diagnosis the first go round.  If that's what it takes to get the data I'll suck it up, literally.  Any words of guidance from you regulars?

Welcome to the forum and read this

New to CPAP - TheProcess

Basically you will be wired to monitor your heart, oxygen saturation, Breathing effort, and brain activity.  For the first half, you will have sensors near your nose and mouth to sense airflow.
The Titration half you will wear a CPAP mask, and be placed on a CPAP machine that they will periodically raise the pressure to determine for that night what your optimum pressure is.

You want a FULL copy of the sleep study, not just the summary.
You want to get IMHO a ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet CPAP (actually commonly referred to as an APAP) machine (or the for Her variant).  This machine is far more versatile than a CPAP (constant pressure) machine.  It will run in either CPAP or APAP (auto) mode.  Remember you will have this machine for the 5+ years that is the expected life of the machine.
You a copy of your Prescription so you have the choice of online purchase of supplies.

Should I ask for the full study the morning after?  Or do I need to wait until the follow up with Dr?

The technicians are unlikely to discuss the test with you extensively, and the report needs to be written and accepted by the doctor. You should ask for a copy of your test, and any prescriptions at your follow-up. You should reserve the right to select a DME (equipment provider) of your choice, not one you are necessarily referred to. It would be a good idea at this early date to contact your insurance to get a list of in-network CPAP DME providers. That will allow you to shop for the best service and deal, and the supplier that will provide the machine of your choice. I agree with Bonjour on the Resmed Airsense 10 Autoset due to its better response, comfort and empowering data.

So basically after the test just chill and wait for results from Dr.  I don't expect the tech to offer up much info but it would be nice to grab a copy of the test if possible.

As for the esophageal manometry, is that a common thing for these tests or more of an edge case for severe patients?

Here in Oz that is not normally part of a PSG sleep test, it is only done when you have gastric symptoms such as severe heartburn. Reading up on the procedure on WebMD, it doesn't look like it's compatible with a PSG anyway because of the mechanics of the test. Do you suffer from gastric issues? If so you may want the manometry test at a separate session.

The actual sleep test is pretty benign - the worst part is getting the goop out of your hair later. Although you will have a lot of sensors and electrodes attached, none are invasive and there are no injections involved. Basically they just tape or stick the sensors to your skin, with a couple of belts around the chest and belly and a canula which sits under your nose. The sensors attached to your head use a sticky gel to ensure a good contact - getting the gel out is the worst part of the process. Use a lot of shampoo!

The choice of a machine will be made after the test results come back. I agree with my colleagues above that the Resmed AutoSet (incl for Her) is far and away the best for normal obstructive apnea. If you have complications such as central sleep apnea or various respiratory conditions then a different type of machine may need to be considered.

Thanks!   Once again I'm making a mountain out of a molehill.  I blame the sleep deprivation!

If you enjoy your mornings, the quickest way to get there is while sleeping.  Relax.

You'll be monitored by well-intentioned professionals who actually do not want to screw up.  You'll learn from your physician/sleep specialist about their findings once the results are generated in a report and the report is reviewed and signed off, the same way an engineer has to sign off on building plans.  Only then can you be given the report...THE report.

RE: First sleep study tomorrow night, nervous!
Well I had the study last night. I ended up only sleeping for about an hour. Probably not long enough for a diagnosis other that the obvious of insomnia. The nurse mentioned I didn't go into rem but I did have several events during the time I slept. Guess I just have to wait on results now and see what's next. Overall the experience was pretty bad. The nurses just stuck the electrodes on without measurements, didn't measure my neck, nowhere near the number of sensors my wife had when she had her titration. The hotel room was dilapadated, noisey, and overall uncomfortable.

It was said above, get a copy of the Sleep Study, and a prescription for a ResMed AutoSet. From that info we can make sure that you likely do not require a bilevel or are likely to have significant Central Apnea (even if you do your doctor will likely start you on a CPAP). Anyway, we can help you to titrate your settings.
