Gave my old Dreamstation to a friend, look at his results

Gave my old Dreamstation to a friend, look at his results
So a friend of mine was interested in the dreamstation machine I just bought, so I gave it to him for 1 night and set it at lowest pressure possible with EPAP at 2cm h20. I guess that's what C Flex does?

Although timing is little bit weird with c flex and sometimes messes up breathing but still...

Here are his results.

What do you guys think?

He said he woke up after 2 hours and felt upset because of the pressure!

I slept with pressure of 15 till I figured out what works. How can 2 to 4 cm h20 hurt his sleep so much?

I think he might have some sleeping problem out of the data I saw here.

Also for anyone reading! Do not buy this machine, it is crap. There is a reason why I gave it to him. I use ResMed Aircurve 10 Vauto now. It is lightyears AHEAD of that Screamstation thing.

Don't get me wrong, Dream station is okay if you have just regular obstructive apnea if you are a fat guy that needs constant pressure.

Algorithm is slow to adapt to the pressure changes needed and there is no pressure support to deal with flow limitations and stuff.

There are enough obstructive apnea and hypopnea to say he likely needs CPAP and the extent of snoring snd flow limit is pretty bad. I think if he is willing to try again, using auto COAP with a minimum pressure of 7.0 and max at 12 might offer more comfortable results. A pressure of 4 is insufficient for most adults and might explain a lot of his discomfort. I wouldn’t do that to my worst enemy.

Hello Thank you for your advice!

Amazing direct logical.

Thank you so much. I will give this machine to him as a gift. It's a very close friend of mine.Maybe it helps him better than it helped me.

Setting a machine to a fixed pressure of 4 (which is way too low) and CFlex of 2 won't work. The machine can't go lower than 4, so It cannot drop exhale pressure 2cm.

So CFlex of 2 can't kick in unless the pressure is set at 6cm or higher.
6cm pressure - 2 cm CFlex = 4.

You need to get rid of the calendar so we can see the rest of the stats.

Set pressures as stated by SleepRider.

Your friend has an RDI of just under 15 which makes him borderline mild/moderate. If I were a doctor I would diagnose him as having moderate sleep apnea. Note this is with the theraputic effect of 4 cmw of support. He will be actually worse.

The question is how to proceed.
1. Have him join AB and start his own thread
2. Determine what path to follow.
a. See his primary care Dr to recommend a sleep specialist to schedule a sleep study some months out
b. Proceed with self directed treatment in some form.

I hear constant criticism of the Dreamstation, and will admit I've recently been questioning if mine isn't up to the task..
(five days ago I sent an email query to supplier # 2 on the suppliers list asking about a ResMed machine.. to date I have had no reply  Thinking-about )

But the Dreamstation used to work well for me originally, and after playing around with settings to figure out how to best get it to work with the switch from a nose mask to a full face mask, I am finally back to numbers below 1.0 (previously my average was in the 1.5 region, but started to climb over a period of months).

The Dreamstation operates in either fixed or auto mode, and for almost 4 years I was on fixed pressure, even though I was initially trialed on auto with good results.

I now have set my minimum pressure to 8.0, maximum to 15.0 - no ramp, no C Flex / A Flex.. my results over the last few nights have been in the 0.5 to 0.7 range, with the exception of the nights when I have had a few drinks and my AHI has risen to 1.5

With the lower maximum pressure I'm getting less sleep disturbance than when I tried it set to 20..
Switching from a fixed pressure of 8.0 to auto now allows the machine to increase the pressure to combat the apnoea events more effectively (originally my respiratory specialist had the machine set to a fixed 7.0, but I increased it myself because I often felt I was starving for air with the mask on).

So once the correct settings are found the Dreamstation can effectively work for treating apnoea for many people.

Ockrocket,
Happy to hear you are getting your number back down. I know you've been worried about it for awhile.

And you are correct, there is a lot of criticism for the DreamStation.

My daughter uses a DreamStation with pressures up and down and all over the place. I felt she was just sensitive to pressure swings. Her doctors only advice was to keep raising pressure. The last I checked she was on Auto 10 min -20 max. AHI between 3-4. AFlex 3.

I asked her to ignore that doc and change the machine to Cpap mode. We then set the pressure to 12cm and turned Flex to off.
She now has an AHI mostly around .5 to 1.0 and feels more rested.

The DreamStation can be adjusted, but takes a little more time and patience than with a ResMed.

Good luck!
