GurdBonk Starting

RE: GurdBonk Starting
Here is a PM I sent to a few of y'all explaining my plight.

Folks.  Thank you So much for your time and interest in my "case".
You are the first to show the sense of urgency I have been feeling/experiencing particularly over the last few months of really poor sleep and daytime fatigue. And over the last 6 months, my normally fairly well controlled hypertension has gotten worse.  And my good 'ol athletic heart that normally had a resting rate in the low 40's (with an occasional PVC that has been deemed typical for me) has climbed to resting rate in the mid 60s.
And I have been really tired and readily fall asleep to the point that I am concerned on really long automobile drives.  So you have recognized in my studies what I am experiencing.  Yes it is scary.
In December (back a few months ago), I decided it was finally time to get breathing help at night to improve my sleep.
I live in a town of 70,000 and we have one main sleep center with one sleep doc and her two sleep NursePractioner experts.  The wait times for an appointment, a sleep study, and a follow up appointment take 1.5-2 months to cycle.  My titration study was in early January, I visited regularly trying to get a copy of the results, they were only generated by mid February and were presented to me when I attended the Feb 19 appt with one of the sleep study nurse practitioners.
And to my surprise at that appointment 9 days ago she said the titration study didn't work. And that I needed at least one, if not more sleep studies and follow ups, before they can determine what machine I would eventually get.  I went ahead and scheduled my next sleep study with them.  And I asked for a loaner CPAP or anything that could help me in the short term. My next sleep study they could fit me in is April 3rd.  I'm scheduled to be test fitted for a loaner CPAP at the same facility in Mid March at the same facility.

I walked out of my February 19 appointment extremely frustrated. I decided I would just purchase my own CPAP machine. I was unaware of this apnea board. I did a little bit of studying and felt like if I purchased a resmed 10 vauto out of my pocket I would be able to start some kind of Hose breathing.  That machine arrived yesterday. I planned to use it last night. But when I read your responses, I decided to just tough out another normal night sleep.  I did have a follow up with my primary care provider for a bad respiratory illness (sleeping even worse), a nurse practitioner here in town, last week, and expressed my frustration with how slowly my attempt at getting our local sleep study experts to get me a CPAP support. She did inform me that there was another cardiologist in town that runs a small sleep business. And frankly he doesn't have the greatest reputation (he's a boozer), but I went ahead and made a stop at his office and I have an appointment with him in a few weeks.

I only found this apnea board the day after I ordered the 10 vauto. I obviously wished I had not ordered that unit and I had uploaded my studies so that I did not p*** away $1500 of my personal money for the wrong unit. So, what should I do next?

EDIT

My new ASV from Secondwind should hopefully arrive on Monday.
Me, I am headed to camp in southern utah with a pile of friends this weekend riding mountain bikes all over Gooseberry Mesa.  Hopefully I will have cell service.  And the camping is a coupla thousand feet lower elevation.  Maybe I will sleep better this weekend?!?

I notice you have a full face mask in your profile. I would bet you can breathe through your nose, and a nasal pillows mask like the Resmed Airfit P10 may be something to consider.  It is very light and minimal, easy to seal, and as long as you avoid mouth leaks it is a very comfortable lightweight option that looks a bit less medicinal.  Either way, at least you will be saving your health with the ASV.

Well, my misspent youth and adulthood of playing collision sports (Football, Lacrosse, bicycle racing, motorcycle racing...) has left me as a mostly as a mouthbreather (multiple times fractured nose, one surgery to fix, then subsequent broken noses) thus the need for a full facemask   Hopefully the f30i works for me.

Pretty I ain't.

But I have had a wonderful life as an engineer, athlete, coach,....   Never married, no kids although I have helped raise a number of them though GF's and my coaching/mentoring duties.  And I led product development teams for a major medical device manufacturer so I mentored a number of great young engineers too.   NO regrets, sure I would have done things a bit different.  I wish I had pursued CPAP therapy back in 2016 after my first sleep study but I was retiring at age 56 at the time and was convinced my sleep problems were related to job stress.  Obviously I was wrong.

Thank you so much to all that have taken time over the last 36 hours to get me on the right path.  I owe y'all a beer or wine or OJ if we ever meet!  Cheers!

You asked what to do with the Vauto. I don't know where you got it, but you over-paid, so any resale is going to be a bit tough. A couple online marketplaces are available, like Dotmed, Offerup, Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist where the machines can be sold. It's going to be hard to get north of $800 for it, even as a new open-box, because you cannot service a warranty. Ideally, you will return it to where you got it with perhaps a 20-30% restocking fee. It's a bit steep, but better than a total loss.

You made up for it with a good price on the ASV, and I would not have hesitated to get the "gently used" unit. You have a sufficient diagnostic PSG to demonstrate you have central or complex apnea, and your titration test proves you are not able to use CPAP, so you should be able to get insurance coverage for ASV, especially as you demonstrate efficacy and use. I would avoid the specialist and try to have your primary doctor manage your therapy and prescription needs. I do the same with my doctor / internal medicine. We just include a discusion of how the therapy is going, and that covers requirements for coverage. We can talk about it later.

Enjoy the trip to Utah. It should be getting pretty nice in the red rocks.

Thank you sleeprider.   Had a wonderful trip, finally over my headcold, Gooseberry Mesa was outstanding.  Home early this Sunday because I have a birthday party for a couple of my old geezer friends.   I will reach out to the folks I purchased the original machine from, see if there is any way to return the unit.   My new ASV arrives tomorrow by noon, so Monday night should be my first opportunity....

Hope you'll get the ASV soon and get it setup to do its job. It does do what it's supposed to do; it'll block CA and prevent OA at the same time. Once dialed in, it will work GREAT. Best wishes to your success.

My polar ignite watch sleep results are interesting. I only slept 4 hrs 9 minutes but it was good sleep. I'm guessing there's a nap in my future, how do I make sure I don't corrupt the sleep results and how do I gather more info when I have a big gap between my night sleep and a long nap at some point in the middle of the day? And I soon as I get used to the mask And the machine I will sleep longer at night, right? Thanks again everybody. I had a regular echo cardiogram yesterday morning and I have a stress echocardiogram scheduled for this morning, then we're going to go mountain biking Sedona Arizona for the afternoon. I wonder when I get to work in my nap?

RE: GurdBonk Starting
You won't corrupt your OSCAR results with a nap. The best way to exclude a session is to turn the session off (session information is near the bottom of the left pane under statistics). You have the data, but can switch it on and off if you want to see just the night sleep. Your machine records sessions from noon to noon, so if your nap is after noon, the session will be on tomorrow's data. If you bridge noon, it can actually show up on two days.

Just don’t import data until you have finished sleeping and before noon if you sleep after noon import data once the following day. The reason being OSCAR won’t currently import a later session on a day data has already been imported. If that makes any kind of sense Big Grin

Well, a bit hamfisted in my first attempt to clean up Oscar graph from my first night of sleep but here it is. And y'all can call me "Buck" as a preferred nickname when casually responding if you so desire.
