I just checked my nook and blackberry, too! The dcwg.org check-sites are being swamped by PC owners trying to beat the midnight deadline.

Well, since the people who were infected are not on the Internet today, if suppose if I created poll to see how many of our members were knocked off the Web it would be kind of pointless. Bigwink Too-funny

I think they said that only about 570,000 people were infected according to original estimates, but I'm sure a large portion of those have fixed their issues after these warnings started coming out. The FBI says only about 250,000 computers still remained infected last night, world-wide. They reported that as of last night, only about 45,000 computers in the U.S. were still infected.

So, all-in-all, 45,000 computers in the U.S. is a relatively small portion of all the U.S. computers that are connected to the Internet.

Y2K was a non-event because the fixes were so widely published and everyone was given enough advance warning prior to Jan 1, 2000. Had no one done anything to fix the Y2K issues on systems and computers world-wide, it would have had catastrophic consequences world-wide.

Many people think the "Y2K scare" was some sort of scam or hoax, making fun of those who warned others of the possible consequences of that event. It was not a scam nor a hoax. It was very real. But fortunately, a TON of IT people put in many hours of work to make sure that the world's computer systems were not affected by the date rollover error. In the U.S. alone, it's estimated that over $300 billion was spent on correcting Y2K issues. Companies and governments don't spend that kind of cash to correct something that is a non-issue, hoax or scam.

Once the majority of Y2k-relatated errors were fixed, the Jan 1, 2000 event became a non-event with not much disruption at all. This emboldened the naysayers to say "See, Y2K was nothing at all... Jan 1st came and went without any problems... all these 'Y2K nutjobs' were wrong".

But, what the naysayers don't realize is it because of the warnings of those "nutjobs" that Y2K issues were fixed, resulting in the Jan 1 non-event. But that still doesn't stop them from ridiculing the computer experts that were issuing the warnings to the public or making fun of people who took the issue seroiusly.

Yeah. Or like the shutting off of analog broadcast TV.

Can you imagine anyone living in a cave who was still using a TV antenna in 2009 when the feds shut down analog broadcasts and ordered everyone to go digital?
