[Health] Blue light kills your melatonin levels

Blue light kills your melatonin levels
Hi;
As you may have had heard before artificial blue light kills your melatonin levels. How does this work?  every morning you see the blue of the sky and colour of sunrise. This starts your biological clock.  And every night sunsets and you start pumping melatonin for sleep. But Every day we experience artificial blue light form laptop, tv and cellular phone screens. For good night sleep, we must adjust their settings to decrease the amount of artificial blue light we are subject to.  You must start with your tv. You must have realized most news channels use blue light backgrounds to keep you awake while watching boring news and debate programs. while watching blue background news or debates prefer black and white. Go to settings colour setting, advanced options start decreasing till you feel it is enough. Then if you have red and green balance; increase red a bit for more natural skin colour. You may increase advanced contrast levels if you feel dark are not black enough. Gama is a different story. Down load a gamma adjustment picture. Use a USB to open it on your tv. Now you can adjust the gamma to natural levels.
At your laptop, it is much user-friendly right-click to display setting, advanced display settings, colour calibration, click next and the calibration begins in a user-friendly way. Decrease blue color to a minimum for the best result. Then you may have to decrease green or red just a click to adjust the natural grey colour.
At your cellular phone decrease brightness at night and at settings if there is a night mode or blue light settings use them.

Wish you a good night sleep.

There is a free app that will adjust your device's display depending on the local time of the day. It's called "f.lux". You can even control some LED light brands with it as well.

Absolutely!  Many of the apps have time settings that you can use.  Like sunset to sunrise, or adjustable hours you can set.

The app that Crimson Nape mentioned, f.lux, I have been using for a very long time.  Works well for me.

RE: Blue light kills your melatonin levels
I use Twilight from the Sleep as Android folks on my phone. my android 7 & windows 10 each have it's own blue light app. we don't have a tv so I don't have a solution for that. some people wear special glasses after dark designed to filter blue out. while I go along with it, I confess I'm a bit skeptical that blue light significantly effects most of us.

RE: Blue light kills your melatonin levels
I remember researching Blue light spectrume and a lot of articles suggested not to use your computer just before going to sleep, I guess it had something to do with melatonin naturally being produced. Blue light is the harshest light ray to your eyes because it has the shortest ray on the light spectrum and penetrates deeper into soft tissue. I use blue blockers for computer use because the Computer MFG's really did not care 4 or 5 years ago and now they have software to knock it down some because of potential law suits. Cell phones also have some nastys I will not get into tonight.
Good article and people should be aware of Mfg who's top management are worried about the bottom line more than anything else and with econmy in rough shape they can even get worse when desperate from outside pressures.
If you are skeptical about blue light just think about welders who wear special lenses to protect their eyes from ultraviolet, infared and high visible light. Welder's would have permanet eye damage if not wearing those eye protection lenses, I'm a licensed welder who was taught this in welding school & I have had my share of flashes over the years. Ultraviolet is very nasty and will leave blisters on the outside of eye until it heals, infared light leaves permanet damage.

Canuck2, I accept your point but I'm sure you'll agree that looking at the welder's arc is far more dangerous than the blue light from our devices. some folks may be particularly sensitive but my 'guess' (admittedly based pretty much solely on my own limited experience) is that exposure to blue light from 'normal' use of these devices doesn't affect most people to a significant degree. like you inferred, I'd be more worried about the phone in my pocket; but (foolishly perhaps) I don't worry about that either. regardless, like other elements of sleep hygiene, afaik, avoiding blue light can't hurt and might help. I'm open to persuasion, but because apps make it so easy to avoid blue light, I figure proof of it's effect either way isn't really necessary.

On my Linux Mint, there is a tiny application called Redshift.  When configuring, you provide your latitude and longitude coordinates, and a color temperature.  The app figures out the rest.  It visibly modifies the color balance on my LED monitor.  Very convenient, automatic.  Redshift is open-source, and is said to be available for most Linux distributions.

RE: Blue light kills your melatonin levels
I require pretty strong reading glasses to see my computer monitor, and I went to Amazon and bought some that also block the blue light from my monitor.  I also take Melatonin tablet each night (usually 5mg) to help get me in sleepytime mode.  Dreaming  I also admit to taking Benadryl on occasion when absolutely needed.  Sometimes my mind won't shut off.

I was using RedShift a while back, but it stopped working for me.  Never got around to re-installing it since I use my computer glasses anyway.
