[Health] Fragmented sleep due to pain

Fragmented sleep due to pain
In both my initial sleep study and a recent titration it was noted that my sleep was very fragmented due to periodic limb movement. And while I had been aware for years that as arthritis has had its way with my body, I had been so focused on getting CPAP working that I did not pay any attention to the pain I have been in at night.

I am now starting a program of various exercises to help with relaxing my arthritic joints and the muscles surrounding them, as well as working on my throat exercises...

What I find frustrating is that I just did not connect my pain, and the movement to relieve it with arousals from sleep. What is also frustrating is that two sleep docs also never mentioned the PLMS until this last titration when the sleep tech pointed out the data to the doc.

Anyway, to late to turn back any of those clocks, lol.

I am wondering if anyone else here suffers from pain at night, and how you deal with it? And has the pain affected CPAP therapy for you??

What kind of mattress you sleeping in?

I used to get hip pain in my bed until I went to a good memory foam bead.

The memory foam beds (visco-elastic) intend to be body conforming, and as a result they do restrict movement once you sink in. It can take some getting used to, but they also distribute weight better than most bedding, so pressure points are eliminated. It's one of many options today.

Mem-foam pillows and mem-foam mattress topper is what dealt with my neck pain. I thought it might be a scam, but instead its a godsend. Just don't fall for the overpriced (Tempur-pedic). A $25 mem-foam pillow from Kohl's is as good or better than a $129 pillow from Tempur-gougic. I've got three different ones from different stores, and I did a lot of in-person shopping to find them. But if you go to Sears online, there are 400 different pillows available, and you can't tell much by trying to feel the pictures. After a while it became a blur, so I went to 7 or 8 different brick-and-mortar stores to get what I wanted/needed.

I have arthritis that interferes with my sleep. Sometimes there is pain but most of the time it is just discomfort that begs my body to change position. This causes me to wake up 3-4 times per night regardless of the PAP therapy. This frequency is low compared to your PLMS and is not a significant issue.
I find that exercises for the muscles around the joints in question are very helpful in treating my arthritis so I hope they are also for you.

if you can't decide then you don't have enough data.

I think you are better off getting a decent mattress and then adding the 3 inch memory foam pad separately due to that sinking problem. It might help, if you haven't already done so, to have your doctor schedule you with a physical therapist to arrange a group of exercises that will help relieve your pain. Did wonders for my leg and back last year. So long as I keep doing them relatively regularly, both continue to do well and be mostly pain free. I do take 2 aspirin daily (325 mg) daily, but that's usually a morning thing, so not all that helpful at night.

There are some very good medicines that can relieve pain due arthritis. Get your doctor to refer you to a specialist.

RE: Fragmented sleep due to pain
I have nerve pain in my legs due to deteriorating L4 and L5. Some call it sciatica. My iliotibial bands are also cramped many nights. I don't like pain medication. The nights I have tried pain medication, my AHI went up by a factor of four. I am currently trying Lyrica to help with the nerve damage. Many nights I find it hard to find a position that my legs like. Maybe someday I will try a new type of bed. Medical bills come first. Sad

That, to me, is a very sound approach. While mem-foam is wonderful, I think it may have support issues, so a combination like that can help solve both issues.

One other advantage, is that mattresses wear out. So do toppers, but replacing a topper after 7 years for a couple hundee is much more economical than replacing a $1300 mattress. I think this extends the useful life of the mattress and saves you some $ in the long run.
