Highest Periodic Breathing, Leaks and Apnea Ever!
#61
RE: Highest Periodic Breathing, Leaks and Apnea Ever!
I looked at the settings on my Dreamstation and it has the Flex setting at 2. I'm not sure what the Flex setting is supposed to do or how it helps. I sleep mostly on my back because I need to use a wedge pillow to elevate my legs at night because of my venous insufficiency, otherwise I prefer sleeping on my side. Much of the time I just end up kicking the wedge cushion away because I feel better when I'm on my side. Also, I have tried the cervical collar a few different times but it is so uncomfortable, even when I wear it more on the loose side so I kind of just gave up on it. I have been told many times on here when I attach more detailed data that my apneas are more positional and that's from chin tucking.  As far as the machine itself goes, I was hoping they would give me the ResMed AirSense machine because my son and my brother-in-law both use that machine and have benefited greatly from it. I may call my doctor's office and see if there's a possibility of switching it out since I just picked this one up 4 days ago. I still use the same mask -the Dreamwear minimal contact full face mask though the tubing I was given with this Dreamstation machine is a 15 so a bit narrower than the tubing I used for my System One. Not sure if that makes any difference or not.  Anyhow, I will post more data in a few days and the thing that still puzzles me is the differences between the readings on the machine itself and the data from the card when I upload it. Thanks for all the help and advice.

The doc and DME will issue what they want unless to tell them you prefer ResMed. And then to back it up, you would need to refuse any machine other than what you want. As for the collar, you may need to try a different design or brand.

Jennie, you might want to try one of those neck support pillows that has a thickening along the bottom of the pillow.

Your problems are positional apnea, high leaks and I so wish you had gotten a Resmed. You were not paying attention.

When you update and upgrade your CPAP be sure to get a Resmed that at least gives you EPR and preferably move to the Aircurve 10 Vauto bilevel.  Believe it or not, there is a Resmed Aircurve 10 Vauto on the Louisville Craigslist for $300  A greqt deal if you want some better sleep and therapy. Reading between the lines on the Craigslist ad, the user had to upgrade to ASV by order of the pulmonologist.  Based on the kinds of RERA, Hypopnea, snores and uneven respiration resulting from what appears to be airway restriction that I'm seeing with your System One CPAP, the Vauto will feel like a miracle.  Please give it consideration. I would buy it if I was closer.

This was post #8 in this long thread. The fact you settled for another Philips CPAP is really disturbing. There is a saying attributed to Albert Einstein, "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results."

New Machine, New Settings, Worse Outcomes Yet!

I updated my Oscar software today to the Oscar V1.1.1 and I am somewhat confused. I have been posting here since 2015 since I started with my ole Phillips Respironics System One CPAP machine. I had many posts, with many attachments to get help with my sleep apnea issues. So now after updating to this newer version of the Oscar software it seems like all of my old posts have disappeared.  Is this supposed to happen?  Anyhow I need advice for my recent sleep data...
I am now, as of August 26, 2020 using the Dreamstation CPAP machine. My previous pressure setting was a fixed 13 on my System One. Now my doctor has me on Auto CPAP with my pressure at 10cm-20cm so it varies throughout the night depending on my needs.  Well it seems that my needs are definitely not being met and my sleep is worse than it ever was on the old fixed pressure of 13 on my old System One machine! It was a bit of adjustment getting used to being on an Auto pressure and a different machine, but my doctor assured me my sleep would improve 100% and I would get much better sleep with less events and AHIs- he was so wrong because I am seeing numbers now higher than I ever have in my 12 years using CPAP therapy! What is going on and what am I doing wrong? Was my doctor correct in making these changes for me?  I feel tireder than ever during the day and some of the data from the last few nights has really blown me away. I need some help desperately from you all as to what if any changes still need to be made to my current therapy. I am so tired of being tired all of the time. I realize I have other health issues, and my sleep doctor is well aware of them, so he should be considering all of this when deciding what I need as far as therapy for my sleep apnea. Please weigh in with any advice! I will try to attach some date from my recent Oscar charts. Thanks.

I also forgot to ask, with this updated Oscar software there is something new in the left column that
wasn't there before -
What does the "Variable Breathing" mean? This wasn't there before when I looked at my charts and data; is it because my machine and settings have changed? Just asking because this was something I hadn't seen before.

I don't think you can improve with the leaks you have.  The leak chart is way to high.  What type of mask do you use, you list a philips?   With a leak chart like that you are getting little or no therapy. Check out positional Apnea, chin tuck. Again, you have to find out why and how to stop the leaks.

RE: Highest Periodic Breathing, Leaks and Apnea Ever!
Jennie54, I merged your new thread post with the old thread. There is no change in the problem and the new Dreamstation acts identically to the System One. I'm sorry you settled for another Philips CPAP, and you still need a soft cervical collar to help your leaks and positional apnea.

We have a wiki that explains Variable Breathing http://www.apneaboard.com/wiki/index.php..._Breathing As you can see, when variable breathing is flagged, the Auto CPAP pressure algorithm is suspended and the pressure remains flat-lined.
