Home Sleep Study Recommendations Sought
I have treated sleep apnea, and have had multiple laboratory sleep studies. My son, in his thirties, needs to be screened for sleep apnea, but he does not want to take an in-laboratory study. What are the best options for an at-home sleep study? How should he go about finding a reliable approach to diagnosis through an at-home test? Is it best to find a local sleep apnea doctor? Are sites like Lofta legitimate for these types of tests, or would you recommend against the online sites? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

We do have a list of Home Sleep Test Providers here:
SleepTest List. I can't recommend one over the other, but maybe some of our members that have used these will chime in with some advice.

You should consider whether his health insurance is likely to pick up the cost of testing, evaluation, and equipment, or if he is better off buying out-of-pocket due to high copay or deductible requirements. It is possible that going through insurance can result in higher overall costs. If you are going to file insurance claims, then he can use his primary doctor to request the home sleep test or to refer to an in-network sleep specialist. He should simply express his opposition to clinical sleep testing and preference for a home test. Similarly, identify the in-network DME you want to work with for equipment and supplies by researching the list of in-network DME providers for his insurance and choosing a company with decent reviews and that is not under an exclusive market agreement to a manufacturer like Philips (just ask if they dispense both Philips and Resmed).
If insurance is not a consideration, there are many choices of online providers that offer the test equipment, evaluation and prescription services that you can use to buy equipment. The prices for testing and prescription services vary, but the list linked by OpalRose is a good place to start.
