How to make distilled water for free

RE: How to make distilled water for free
Technically vinegar is a weak acid. A weak acid is one which doesn't ionise fully when it is dissolved in water. A strong acid such as sulfuric, nitric or hydrochloric would fully ionize. There is a lot of chemical mumbo jumbo such as PKa, equlibrium constants and such that describes the behaviors of acids but the take home message is that weak acids will probably not ruin your equipment. Now hypochlorite (bleach) is a whole other story.

I hold both ends under the hot water tap, add a little anti-bacterial soap, and fill the hose more than halfway. Then I carry to the shower. Holding it over the shower floor in case there's a spill, in a "U" shape, I move the ends up and down so the soapy water sloshes back and forth in the hose. Then I rinse it out by holding one end under the tap while the other end lies on the shower floor.

Then I hang it up to dry. I like to do this shortly before going to bed. If I do it too early in the day the hose just hangs there drying, but never gets completely dry. Then when I go to use it it stinks sometimes.

Has anyone used a pressure cooker to make distilled water?

It would require collecting and condensing the steam venting from the pressure cooker. I think the cost in energy and, certainly, time would probably be more than the $0.87/gal I pay at the supermarket. Then there is the scalding hazard if you don't have a well thought out method.

This is something that has large scale savings. It's cheaper per liter to produce a whole lot of distilled water than it is to produce a few liters. So a small distillery in your house (which is what you need) is probably going to cost more than just getting the water from the drugstore.

Also, having a still in your house is likely to confuse any policemen who catch site of it. And buying the hardware for a still is likely to lead to embarrassing questions...

Bottom line, it is cheap and in plentiful supply in drugstores. If you live in an area with "soft" water you can likely save even that by using the local tap water, but if your water supply is "hard" it will cause problems.

A pressure cooker won't make distilled water.   Done properly, it would sterilize the water, and probably remove chlorine, but the water that remains behind in the pressure cooker would actually be less pure than the water you started with.  It would cause more problems in your CPAP machine than tap water.

You could hook up the steam output to a condensation tube, but messing with a pressure cooker is asking for an explosion.

If you want to build your own water still, a pressure cooker is not really a good starting point.
