I was awake and machine recorded AHI 1.8

Question
I was awake and machine recorded AHI 1.8
I put on the mask and was awake for 2 hrs. And saw the machine recorded AHI 1.8.

Is it normal or the machine is broken? Attached is the report.

It's normal. When awake events don't count. The problem is the machine can't tell if your awake or not. So just disregard anything recorded when you know your awake.

its not uncommon in people with sleep apnea to have apnea when awake.

A person's breathing is very erratic while awake. Your breathing only becomes rhythmic while asleep.

My husband has the habit of not shutting his CPAP off when he wakes up before he wants to get up--or does get up for a bathroom break and comes back to bed.  His "sleep/wake junk" ruins a perfectly good AHI recorded before this happens as he tosses and turns, holds his breath changing positions, etc.  I need to get him on Sleepyhead so he has a visual of what he is doing.  Your apneas show as CA--typically that means you are holding your breath--very easy to do when awake.

I'll frequently ruin a "perfect" night (0.0) by staying in bed a couple of hours after I should have gotten up. No Apneas, but I'll always get a couple of CA events during that time.

When that happens to me it usually means I did fall asleep. But it doesn't matter either way. There's no way to tell if there's anything wrong with the machine. If you had 4 pauses in your breathing during a period of time that was just over 2 hours, you'd have a AHI of 1.8. This has nothing to do with whether you were asleep or not.

As has been said before, unlike St Nick the machine doesn't know if you are sleeping or awake. :-)

If you have a tendency to lie awake at night after being woken SleepyHead is really important to see how well you actually did. On days when I have a "bad" AHI I can usually track it to periods when I was lying awake in bed hoping to fall back asleep. I can see the high AHIs (usually plateaus or mesas) and say - yep, that is where I was watching the infomercial on the latest cooking device I don't need. Many a time I have seen AHIs less than 1 and then bang - here is the 10 when I was awake.
