Identity Theft Prevention
#1
Ohmy
My wife just brought me today's mail. After opening the envelopes and scanning the contents, I fed them to my micro-cut shredder. While feeding the shredder I started to wonder what others on this forum do to protect their off-line identities. Thus this poll.

We also take our garbage straight to the dump where it is buried by end of that day. Not that I am concerned about identity theft. Most of my shredded paper (white) goes into mulch.

I use the cross-cut shredder which I have had for quite some time (after learning the necessity of frequent oiling of the cutters to extend life). I used to go through one at my office every year. If there is a pile of stuff to destroy, such as the occasional file cleaning spree, I deposit portions of the clippings in various trash bags, so there is no "total" in any one bag. I then use the normal trash pickup with a bag a pick-up until gone. And I don't think - knock on wood - that the NSA or any other alphabet agency is after me at the moment! Just because you are careful doesn't mean you are paranoid - does it??? Dont-know

This horrible crime is becoming America's fastest growing crime! We really have to be aware of the Online Thieves. Its is also important to remind that Identity theft happens both online and offline. Don't let thieves take everything you own, including your good credit record! I've seen it happen and it's not pretty.

I shred anything with a name or numbers on it, then I use the shredded paper to start the bar-b-que. On-line identities are even harder to protect. I purchased a piece of software recently and when I went to my paypal account later to check (as I always do) I found it had included an annual "subscription" fee. I cancelled the payment on that real fast! I won't do business with anyone who won't take paypal, I won't type any personal information into a site that does not begin with HTTPS AND is protected by a known company, I check my Paypal account after every transaction and I never respond to ANY email from paypal. If something needs responding to I type the paypal address into my browser myself.
As always, YMMV! You do not have to agree or disagree, I am not a professional so my mental meanderings are simply recollections of things from my own life.

Real emails from PayPal do not have links. Never ever click a link from "PayPal".

The thing is to look at the URL that appears when you hover the mouse over the link. Look for the first slash mark / and what name comes right before it. THAT's who the link goes to.
