OSCAR crash [unable to open profiles] [solution in post #11]

Mind you, I'm not an expert with Windows PCs...

OK, after much fussing with this, I changed the Legacy Graphics to Desktop Open GL.  I had to rebuild all the data in the profiles, but everything is back up and running as normal.

I suspect that the recent Windows update somehow changed the setting from Open GL to Legacy Graphics, but not sure.

Thanks pholynyk , Guy and sheepless for your input and help.  Next step will be watching those Windows updates. I'm usually not aware of them until after it's been done.

Perhaps the little chunk I posted will be enough... if not, I do have the zip file OpalRose posted originally.

Sorry, reposted here in case you wanted to look at it.  Thanks again!

RE: OSCAR crash [unable to open profiles]
in windows update settings you can postpone updates for up to 35 days. I do this to wait to see & avoid the types of complaints reported by others and to make sure I backup personal files just before updating. probably won't help with an update's effect on programs but can avoid other serious problems caused by updates breaking things.

I guess it changed to legacy graphics when Rose tried to start with shift key held down but I thought it was broken before that

I don't know when it changed to legacy, as it was working fine one day and the next day (I assume after a windows update), I was getting a blank page.

That's when I tried starting OSCAR by holding the shift key, and the page then loaded my profiles, but stuff was grayed out and couldn't even click on a profile to open it.

RE: OSCAR crash [unable to open profiles] [solution in post #11]
This is more of a political post  - not directly applicable to your issue - feel free to delete it if you wish.

I had been heavily active in supporting MS Windows for clients thru Vista, 7, 8, 8.1 and 10.  I had witnessed first-hand the escalating madness from Microsoft.  When they removed the ability to manage or control updates in Windows 10, I knew I would soon be done with Windows.  When Windows 7 went to End-of-life, I migrated to Linux Mint Cinnamon, and I've never looked back.  I still have a couple of programs that I occasionally need than have no Linux versions.  So I brought up a VirtualBox VM, Loaded Windows 7 in it, and that is my MS escape hatch.  Updates happen when I Choose, not at someone else's convenience.  I have never had an update that broke anything.  I also use LibreOffice (open-source), which can flawlessly read and write all Microsoft Office document formats, so I'm not missing anything there.

Just sayin . . .

Thanks Becker for the information. I think in time, I will be dropping Windows too.
