Interesting television show
The last few weeks I have been watching this interesting TV show about ADHD in children and trying to get to the bottom of it.
Anyway to cut a long story short in a couple of the case studies they were looking at, they found the children suffering with ODD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, were really suffering from OSA.
Symptoms in the classroom, lack of concentration, not communicating, short term memory loss, not following directions, tiredness, just to name a few.
When these particular children were eventually treated for sleep apnea there problems all but vanished.
I found it very interesting.
Also on the note of young children with sleep apnea, my daughter is a genetic counsellor and has been seeing parents with a baby two months old. The baby stopped breathing on a number of occasions. They were doing tests and ran a genetic profile, that is how my daughter came across the case.
Anyway, it turns out the poor wee baby has sleep apnea.

Just thought I would write about this as I did not know children could be affected by sleep apnea, please excuse my ignorance.

"Irritability" from sleep apnea could easily be confused with ODD.

Which by the way sounds like an odd euphemism for "bad behavior".

I agree wholeheartedly with you Herb. Far too often these days they put these labels on children when as you say it is nothing more than bad behaviour and all they need is a bit of guidance, discipline and tough love.
The main point I was trying to make was the fact about sleep apnea in children, it quite surprised me.

Hi Gabby, what is the name of the show? My wife is an elementary school teacher and often works with kids with ODD, ADHD and other acronyms on the behavioral spectrum and I think she would be very interested in it. If I had the name, I might be able to track it down for her.

And children thought to have these disorders have heavy duty medicines thrown at them to take that is not needed.

A school teacher once told me she thought my kid had a Ritilan deficiency.

Hi Skram,
It was an Australian 3 part series called 'Kids on speed?'
It was on our ABC, Australian Broadcasting Commission.
It was worth watching and I liked their approach. It wasn't all about the drug.
Good luck with getting hold of it and I hope your wife likes it.

RE: Interesting television show
They are too quick to label our children these days and shove a pill down their throat.

Having said that, that is not what this program was about.
