RE: Is this normal
I don't know where you are or why you have a Breas.
If it were me I'd get with the DME and or the sleep specialist and insist on swapping it for either a Resmed S9 Autoset or a PRS1 560 with heated humidifier, so I could easily monitor my own data whenever I chose.
There are many here who can help you decipher the information while you learn. No one cares more about your outcome than you.

Thanks Sleepster. I ordered the chin strap this morning (but it will take a few days to arrive). If anything, I woke up worse this morning. My wife commented that she'd never seen me look as bad (terribly swollen eyelids).
I contacted the specialist to flag it. I don't wake up with a dry mouth, so I'm not sure what is going on. Switching machines is not an option, but I'll discuss it when I meet the specialist next month. I'll try out the chin strap. If I feel better after that, it's likely I'm mouth breathing without knowing. But I can hardly imagine I won't wake up from that, as I've had this happen a few times before going to sleep (by yawning) and it's not a pleasant experience. The blasted mask does leak when I turn on my side and though I adjust before sleeping and sometimes at night, I can imagine that I would sleep through that.

It's normal to try several different masks before settling on something that works best for you. Your DME and insurance likely have policies in place that allow you to try different masks.

It may be that the mouth-leaking wakes you up in the same way an apnea would, but you don't awaken enough to have a memory of it. The main issue here is that when you're leaking badly, for whatever reason, the machine can no longer maintain the pressure splint and your airway collapses just as it would if you had no CPAP machine at all.

You can easily see these leaks when you view the graph on a computer. Getting your leaks under control is fundamental to CPAP therapy. Nothing is as important.

RE: Is this normal
I tried out the chin strap last night (couldn't get one delivered that fast, but I used a wide elastic band).
I woke at 7 am, fully refreshed and went for a one hour walk. I feel terrific. Thanks so much Sleepster, that did the trick! What an amazing phoenix machine! I'm so grateful to Dr. Sullivan for having invented the cpap.

Masks are not refunded by my insurance, only APAP rental, so I'll need to find the right mask fast but I don't care. APAP is working for me. I'll probably write a contribution to success stories later, after I've enjoyed my new life for a bit. I noticed some changes before, but felt like a train wreck waking up and through most of the morning and early afternoon, before perking up. The chin strap did the trick. You guys are terrific. I'm on CPAP after four nights, fully compliant (I sleep well and through the night now). WONDERFUL! Thanks again Sleepster. Sound advice.

Thanks Gabby, this is a great forum. It is unbelievable how different I feel today. Like a weight has been lifted. Long may it continue indeed, but I'll take it day by day.

Hey Visitor, good for you. I am a bit jealous as I am not one of the ones like yourself that had any great "awakening" but I did not feel tired at all beforehand, even with Severe Sleep Apnea..............but glad to hear u got it sorted out so quickly

RE: Is this normal
Hi Shelagh, considering I was slowly turning into zombie man, very tired, no energy, and pushing on for years as you do to keep things moving regardless, with sports falling by the wayside, chores turning into mountains, etc. I think this may be why I feel great upon things turning around. I expect this may turn into the new "normal", i.e. I don't think I'll keep running around elated as I am now (it would be nice of course). My mind kept functioning well though. Somehow I could be creative and perform at work, despite feeling exhausted, and in spare time too, as long as it was something that did not involve more than writing things down. But physical work became an issue in the end. Now I'm zooming along, as I used to. We're a crazy active family in general, and I love sports. I used to swim 2km, ran a lot before that, and did a number of other sports. I still did some of that in the last years, but never consistent and it sort of petered out in the end. I'm so glad there is light at the end of this tunnel. So yeah, it's a great feeling, but if you're doing well in general, I simply think that's where I'm headed too now Smile Spikes like that don't last (except maybe with Herb and Retired guy who always seem on top of the mountain Wink).

RE: Is this normal
The one thing that surprised me is that before I was told to use the chin strap on this forum, I had a terrible day, feeling exhausted like I had run a marathon and woke up with a severe case of floppy eyelids, worse on one side, so I had trouble seeing. It's a little better now, but I'll have to talk to my sleep doctor about it. During the day, I had trouble breathing normally, and my heart rate felt odd. I just read that floppy eyelids are a symptom of OSA. Strange that it would get worse while being on the APAP. Not wearing the chin strap (I never was told to), seemed to have led to a worsening of that condition, before it got better. Too bad.

It is a miraculous machine. For many of us the miracle happens much more slowly.

I'm glad you're enjoying your new lease on life. Many of us forget CPAP therapy is all about improving our awake time.
