Just Diagnosed
Hello. I'm new to sleep apnea. I was just diagnosed with "mild to moderate" sleep apnea yesterday. My doctor has me going to have my third sleep study for CPAP titration. My first question is what happens during the titration? My next question is how long from the study does it take to get your machine all ready to go at home? My doctor also told me that you don't just acquire sleep apnea over night and I've probably had it for 10-15 years (that seems crazy to me?)
Thank you in advance
RE: Just Diagnosed
In a titration they once again hook you up to the sensors. This time you will sleep with a mask attached to a CPAP machine that they can control remotely from outside the room. They will go through a protocol to find your *optimal* settings. The settings they come up with are often not optimal because it's not a typical night. Strange environment; wired up; just not like being home.
How long to get a machine: Varies from a few days to a month. Depends upon the supplier; your insurance; and how quick your doctor is. Just don't let them give you a used or a non-data capable machine. There is a list of best machines to consider -- I don't have the link at my fingertips. Yes, most people have had apnea for years before being diagnosed. Welcome to ApneaBoard. Mongo Admin Note:

RE: Just Diagnosed
Welcome to the forum.
You have had sleep studies, Make sure you get copies then post them here. We will help you be prepared with questions to ask and help you be informed. At your Titration try on as many masks as they will let you. Masks are very personal, your face is different than mine, your apnea is different than mine. Please read the Mask Primer (see my sig) How long does it take? it varies, from a few days to MUCH longer. Your machine, you need to start really thinking about this. Too many patients get what we call "bricks", a machine that records only compliance data, you want a machine that will record detailed data. RE: Just Diagnosed
Hi Adiamond87,
The best you can do for yourself is to be informed before you see your doctor or DME. Use the link given above on machine choices you will know what to ask for. Don't accept any machine that is less than fully data capable, preferably an Auto CPAP. A lot of us here have been diagnosed late in the game of life. I can honestly say that I can look back 20 years and now realize that I had a problem years before being diagnosed. It's not unusual.

RE: Just Diagnosed
Thank you guys so much for all the responses. The fist study was pretty much no activity. I didn't even snore. It was a very atypical night. So I found a sleep specialist because my pcp refused to help me anymore. I don't have the last study but as soon as I do have it I will upload it! I will start educating my self on equipment.

RE: Just Diagnosed
Hi Adiamond87,
WELCOME! to the forum.! It’s pretty common to have sleep apnea quite a while before you get a diagnosis. Good luck to you as you start your CPAP journey, hang in there for more responses to your post.
